Question about VR (Oculus Rift) and PC performance

Hello,

I am very interested in getting Oculus Rift, but I am wondering if my PC is able to run properly ED with VR equipment. I am speculating if using Oculus requires more "power" from the PC and thus wondering if I should go for it. At the moment (and without VR) my computer run ED pretty well and only issues I have had are network-related.

My computer specs:

  • Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE C3 AM3
  • Display adapter: AMD Radeon HD7800 Series
  • RAM: 4Gb 1600MHZ DDR3
  • OS: Windows 7 Professional
  • Motherboard: AROCK 890GX Pro3

Thanks in advance for any useful information.

I'll be honest with you, I don't think it's going to run well at all on that GPU. The CPU might just about cut it, but the GPU rates half the benchmark of a 970, which is probably the lower end of what's ideal. Also nvidia have OR enhancements to add to that, so I wouldn't invest until you're 100% sure. Maybe someone with your setup will have more accurate information though so keep checking back

Why not buy a GTX 970 with it? You are shelling out a fortune anyway, why not go all the way? :D

Thank you drkaii. This is as I thought, I need to upgrade other system specs before going VR. Well, maybe in mean time the customer version of OR will become available at more affordable price :) I think I reconsider getting OR once I get change to upgrade my gaming rig unless someone here can convince me that it'll be great on my current setup.

Thanks again, appreciated.

I'm sorry that we couldn't get you here sooner. We cherish ever single VR user. See you in the vr world soon!

On low settings I can hold 100+ fps in space at Eyefinity resolution (5280x1004) with my 7850 OC. It's only a 1GB card though and I might be limited by the amount of memory at that resolution.

I doubt you'll be able to hold 75 fps in stations on low - I saw drops down to 45 fps in some cases. Again I might be VRAM limited.

If you have a 7870 and 2GB it will likely be ok on low, but again I'd expect it to drop in stations and possibly in RES. If you're just out exploring in space it'll be absolutely fine.

Thanks for the response. I am much combat focused, so I'll doubt that my rig is able to run ED with OR properly. Need to swallow down my enthusiasm towards VR for a while, until I get more appropriate gaming PC.

I am sorry as well :) I wish I had the extra "credits" for upgrading my rig and getting the proper VR equipment - the game would obviously be much more immersive in that way!
