"Election" is what happens instead of a war when two factions of the same ideology are matched in influence. They resolve their conflict peacefully, instead of with guns: whichever side delivers the most missions, cargo, exploration data etc. wins the victory point for the day, best of 7 is the winner. So what's happened here is the loser got pushed down in influence, which put them immediately into a new conflict with the next faction down the ladder.
Yep I got the election bit, I was just wondering if the election state was the result of player activity or just sheer chance of ending up at the same INF to trigger it due to losing the conflict last week. Hard to tell I suppose but presumably both is possible.

It will be because of player activity, but probably your own ;)

Alright so it looks like I'm facing some opposition now - the other side has won 2 days despite me handing in vouchers every single day (several hundred k but I didn't put too much effort in). Have a rough idea who the individual is, and I've likely drawn attention to the war through this thread (and not hiding my location in Inara, plus my carrier in the system is another thing I will be mindful of in the future) - just didn't think someone would actually bother given the insignificance of the system, but ho-hum.

One thing I did wonder - I did lose a couple of CZs the other day (I got the impression that some instances are more difficult than others, maybe it's just the way enemy ships and their outfitting is rolled?), my understanding is that this shouldn't really matter, am I right in thinking that?

Secondly, I did drain the Tritium fuel reserves of the local outpost, which happens to be the system controlling station of the faction I'm currently fighting. Would this have any effect on the war? I thought that only combat vouchers matter but would just like to be certain about this.

If I lose today again I will likely not bother any longer with this - it was just meant to be a bucket list thing and am not really attached to the system, but I have little willpower to engage in a CZ grinding competition. Lessons learned regarding hiding my location for next time though!

If a CMDR is present when the battle ends, its outcome counts toward the war. So if you lose too many you may lose the war for your side. If it looks bleak I'd bug out.

In a Medium or High a lot depends on whether the enemy Spec Ops wing hangs together, or splits apart. On their own they're not all that effective and since they don't count toward massacre missions I'll often ignore them unless they fixate on me.

Good to know, thanks.

Thought I provide an update on those who care (likely nobody lol) - war has been won as of today \o/

Bucket list box ticked, system flipped to anarchy:) Maybe it was some random interference from another player after all, and yes it's true one can become a bit paranoid with this stuff.

And it couldn't have happened any sooner - I've become hostile to the (prior) controlling faction, and their ships were swarming my carrier... I popped one of them and now have to deal with some notoriety. All worth it though.

Nice one ObiW, I hope it means more for doing it alone too ;)

I've flipped several systems alone, it's a challenge I enjoy & each system has a unique geography that can present it's own advantages & hurdles to overcome. I've not managed to flip to an anarchy single handed yet though ;)

Thanks! It certainly does, although I was lucky that I picked a system where it was unlikely to get any significant pushback (I probably would've let it go if I wouldn't have won the conflict by today). It was really more an experiment for myself to see if I can make a difference in the system, and the answer is yes certainly - for the past 5 years I was largely ignorant of the BGS and how it works, I think the next involvement will be more light touch though for me; I do get bored quickly doing repetitive tasks and think I'll limit myself more to 'poking the bear' or guerilla type actions in high traffic systems in the future. Just to trigger events and see how they pan out afterwards.

First though, I'm heading off to the Bubble nebula in my carrier (yes, despite the Tritium issues). Been longing to do this for some time now, the BGS will still be there when I return, and it'll be interesting to see if the system has changed by the time I'm back.

It's fascinating though how a bog standard, boring 'flyover' system can grow on oneself. I'd normally not even bother docking there unless it was for refuelling - and now there is actually a reason for others to stop (namely an IF in two system ports, one of them large pad).
