Question about weapons

So I purchased 2 pulse lasers that have assisted aiming for 6k. Then I purchase the more expensive, more damage pulse lasers for 16k and they are free aim only? I can't enable assisted aiming on them either. I dont understand. do I have to buy the pulse laser that is $32K to have assisted aiming?

The store doesn't even show you what kind of aiming system they have. =/

There are three types of weapon. Fixed, Gimbal, and Turret.

Fixed fire straight ahead (though they have a very small amount of correction to focus fire at various distances).

Gimballed weapons track the target within a certain area around the crosshair. I presume this is what you mean by assisted aiming.

Turret weapons can fire in all directions(unless blocked by your hull) even backwards.

When you are upgrading, there is a small icon that shows the type of weapon. The more expensive 16k lasers do more damage, but to get that class and rank of lasers with gimbals will cost more.

When you purchase a weapon it will be one of the three types and that can't be changed unless you sell it and buy a different kind. It can be either fixed, gimballed, or turreted and each weapon in every class can come in one of those. There is an indicator in the outfitting screen that shows you which type it is, it will look like this.

The first circled icon is what a gimballed weapon will look like in the outfitting screen while the second circled one is what a turreted weapon will have while weapons on fixed mounts will have a small crosshair as their icon.

EDIT: Beaten by Zalifer, with a much better picture than mine! ;)

Hey one more question while I have you guys. the "basic discovery scanner" when i press it. it does nothing besides make a bad ass sound effect. When and where should I be using this?

target what u want to scan and get closer (or at least that's how i thought it needs to be used lol )

When you "fire" it the discovery scanner will find any astronomical object within 500ls and tell you how many it has found. To get more info you must fly to the object, select it in the Navigation panel (it will show as "Unexplored") and wait for your normal scanner to return the info. The more info you have the more it will be worth when you sell it elsewhere.

Where does it tell u this? unless am up closer to an object and targeted it, the scanner seems to do nothing :S lol

Big gas giants can often sick out like a sore thumb due to all the moons reflecting light, but currently your ship will not record them even if you fly close if you don't scan that D first.

Star charts are cheap to buy, but currently can't be bought from a station in the system you are in (subject to change?) [or even next-by systems?]. Making it a big hassle to find planets further out.

You might need to explore to find pristine quality asteroid rings/belts after release. I've seen it said that pirate stations may not advertise their presence - though at least some currently do - and there are already hidden stations in the current build.

Currently there is not much incentive to explore but its worth your time in beta to get used to the mechanic should you want to later.
