Question Detailed Surface Scanner on rings

I got back after a longer break and fitted a ship for mining. I flew to a ring, switched with "M" key to analysis mode, I assigned a fire group to my DSS, I am at lowest supercruise speed very close to a ring, I pressed N for the blue HUD and fired a probe at it, but no results, I can't do anything anymore and am stuck as how I can scan the ring. Can anyone help me out please?

Make sure the Surface Scanner is assigned to primary or secondary fire button by going to the RHS panel and in to "FIRE GROUPS".

One that is assigned you scroll through the various fire grouping until you get to Surface Scanner and engage it.

i am trying to find void opal hotspots, but I guess I get no results on icy rings because they are rare? is that possible? the probe launches, I just get no results afterwards, I tried 5 rings so far. That normal ?

To probe a ring you must have the primary body targeted just as if you were firing probes at it, then move your target reticule away from the body towards the ring until the message changes from "miss" to "ring", then fire your probe. Note some rings are to far away from the primary body to probe so you will never get the "ring" message, but if you are just doing a regular ring around a gas giant or terrestrial body then you shouldn't have a problem.

If you hit the ring correctly it will show a glow that moves around the ring and a message will come up saying "New Astronomical Object Discovered".

Once you get that message of no hotspots show up then there are none in that particular ring. Not all icy rings are equal and not all rings have hotspots, from the wiki;

the locations with the highest concentrations of asteroids with Void Opal cores are Void Opal Hotspots within high-mass icy rings orbiting Gas Giants.

So "high mass" icy rings around gas giants are the ones you should be scanning for void opal hotspots.

thanks ! ok so first I scanned the planet, then i fired another probe when aiming at the ring, I found a orange radius area, is that were I find those rare sites to mine?

Ok, once they show up look in your nav panel, that will tell you what minerals the orange spots have, just select the ones that fits your requirements.

ok thanks, so far only found a low temperature diamond hotspot, damn, looks like it will take time finding the right ring for opal/.

i am checking my nav panel, although I see a orange cluster, I only see planets, stations, asteroids, systems etc in navigation panel, I do not see the extraction etc sites on it. How can I enable to see those too ?

Can't say for certain, but they might be filtered out. In the nav panel, find the filter bit and clear them all so they all show. By nav panel I mean the left hand side of the hud, in case you're looking at the system map?
Can't remember what category they are though, maybe point of interest?

One of the planets that I regularly mine at decided not to show the hotspots that I have previously mined multiple times. I flew to another nearby ring and that worked fine, so I mined there. When I returned to the original ring, I rescanned it, and though the hotspots then showed up in my nav panel, they still weren't shown on the rings of the planet. It's the only planet I've seen this happen on. I'm still in system so will check again later.
