It would seem logical if they didn't survive destruction. So my question is, if/when you are confronted with a rebuy screen will you get your modules replaced including any engineer's upgrade or will you lose your upgrades and your modules are back to 'normal'?

In the Beta, any upgrades were kept when you forked out the insurance to get your ship back....trying not to find out now its live!!!

Yes, the upgrades aren't lost. I experienced this myself after dying 1.376 times to a Deadly Sidewinder with "Deathstar Beamlaser from Hell"
Apparently yes (from Beta experience); they are not cargo and they are treated as materials which you carry with you, as well as the data, like in the SRV.
The logic of that, and explorers being unable to keep data after ship destruction is a little odd, methinks.

According to the voice in game, only your escape pod and of course the pilot survive in the event of the ship explosion. I ask myself where do you put the materials to save them?
Or maybe, like a lot of decisions in this game, it's related with the size of the database on FD servers (storage for players = more bytes in database etc).
