Question: Do I need a flight stick to really to advantage of flgiht assist off?

bummer, a flight stick isn't in the budget for the for seeable future.

I got the logitech 3d pro for $30 US.

I use keyboard for throttle and thrusters.

I haven't taken the plunge into FA OFF yet because every time the result is hilariously disastrous. However I stumbled across this extremely useful guide to FA OFF by Isinona (who is simply the best pilot I have ever seen) who never uses FA ON.

After watching this, I am planning on going somewhere asteroidy and giving it a go again.

I think you need a Hotas and head tracking to really make the most of the game, and it sure helps FA off.

Think if it this way - when you are taught to dive, fly, ski - whatever, you are told to always look where you want to go, if where you want to go is outside your ability to see it, it gets harder to make the right control inputs.

I noticed these additions have made a huge difference to everything from docking, to SC, to combat.

It's not essential, and you can certainly get plenty out of the game without (many do), but I think that for the "ultimate experience", it's worth it.

FA Off is really useful in combat to prevent the drag caused by FA On at the end of a boost turn.

At any other time you might as well use FA On.

It is possible but it is quite hard (on both learning curve AND your hand and wrist muscles) that it is not worth the effort.

Decent joystick or HOTAs is not that expensive... just buy 1 less game on Steam you can pretty much able to afford something :p

HOTAS X gets great reviews, considering how cheap it is. Would have gone for it had I not had the cash for a CH throttle and T160000 stick.

Its not very good with a console controller, infact its pretty much broke. No analog acceleration which makes it over sensitive and twitchy..

adjust the dead zones and its no longer twitchy, also you can bind buttons to different tasks by using a modifier to overcome the lack of controls. as an example i use the left bumper (decelerate) +B for my landing gear and left bumper + Y for my cargo scoop.

I use a hand controller and just started with FA off control.
Definitely doable, I've had to remap the controller for more thrust vector control thpugh.

It comes down to how familiar you are with a keyboard and mouse Ive been flying planes from battlefield 1942 to space ships in the X series so when i came to ED it was second nature. I do imagine a joystick would be better but i find it perfectly fine pulling FA off maneuvers.

Deadzones are fine, its just as soon as I push the stick I'm instantly turning at full speed, I cant do a gentle turn by slowly pushing the stick, its either full speed or nothing, as soon as it detects movement.

So when tracking targets I have to keep flicking the stick, stopping and starting, I cant match turn rate, cos I only turn full lock.

With ff off its just all over the place.

@ste I assume you have the analogue sticks mapped to the axis inputs, not the "up/down/left/right" inputs in-game?
