Newcomer / Intro Question: Do players drop materials when killed?

I tried googling it and asking in-game and no one will answer me. Since I am pretty much useless in pvp and I will not stoop to ganking weaker ships, the question burns. I don't much care for ganking, but it doesn't bother me much any more. Credits are easy to come by and destroying my ships is like stealing my pocket change. If, with my elite 1 explorer rating, my unshielded paper bag of a ship drops premium materials, I can see a perfectly valid reason for destroying it. I always play a neutral good character. It's just how I am, but I wouldn't begrudge players avoiding the grind by taking low hanging fruit. Is my question taboo? Am I opening a can of worms?

Question: Do players drop materials when killed?
Answer: No. Not of-foot, nor player ships when destroyed.

I thought when I destroyed NPC pirates, there was canisters of goods floating around with mats like Focas Crystals, Sheild Emitters and Proto Light Alloys. So, if the NPC's leave that stuff behind, why not players? I don't know this answer myself thinking it would be yes, thus my surprise.

To reduce players interest on killing other players...

Because NPCs can’t collude with players so that they can farm materials off each other, unfortunately not all players are that ethical.

I'm not gonna lie, was kinda hoping there was a little more reason than lulz that explorers are kill on sight to many people. It's my opinion that if players were to drop loot, it wouldn't change the amount of ganking and it would give it a reason that would outweigh any exploitation for mats. Most gankers' ships are maxed out anyway. What would they do with the mats? Build a cargo ship? I know it's more nuanced than that but I really don't care. Anything that encourages new players is a boon to this game, even if the new players are fledgling gankers.

Perhaps players should drop phat lewt when killed by another player. That's what open is for. As for me, I'm perfectly happy in my solo/player group.
