Not sure if explained already but one of the best ways to find pirates that count towards the mission number goal is to hunt them at Unidentified Signal Sources, not nav beacons.

Just don't go into a Strong Signal Source! Don't do it. Thou shalt surely die!

The best option, if available in the designated system, is a Resource Extraction Site.

It's tough to figure out which "wanted" ship is actually a pirate...but I think there might be a way.

Most systems have a "pirate" faction. Killing members of those usually works for me. That doesn't stop me from blasting everything that's wanted though, unless it belongs to a faction I'm supporting and it's not that faction's turf.
