Question for explorers

What does it mean when an system says unexplored and also first discovered by?

"Unexplored" only means you haven't scanned it and don't have the info in your own ship computer. It has nothing to do with whether others have been there.

and "first discovered by" shows the player who was first to scan the star/planet/moon and successfully sell his exploration data (If you lose the data you don't get your name there)

You know. I'm Elite in exploration but something I've wondered to this day is do you need a detailed surface scan to get your name on it or do you just need the basic scan every single ship has?
