Question for Oculus Rift Owners.

Its closish. The CV1 with Low Persistence is sort of about there.
What that does not give you is the 3D, the headtracking or most importantly - the Immersion.

Yes the Rifts image quality is fairly poor compared to a panel. But I'm never going back. Ever. DK2 with ED is a stunning combination.

THank you, Do you mean that the CV1 simulated setting feels like the DK2, or have you used the CV1?

I certainly "understand" the immersion... (well to be honest, I have dreams about what it could be, but I'm sure I have no fricking clue... )
that's why I'm thinking about it. I keep seeing peoples reactions on Youtube, and I keep seeing the same "holy mother of........" expression... So i'm all but sold.

The rift is that good, if you got enough money you can shrug off the 350 USD for one, then go for it.

I would say that you will be "wowed" at how low the resolution actually looks but, once you fire up Elite Dangerous, you'll forget about it and never go back to a monitor.

I am by no mean a resolution fanatic and spent the first week thinking that i was shipped a DK1 instead of a DK2. It's like going back to 640x480 graphics...but the overall experience is absolutely worth it.

The graphics quality is probably about right, but the movement is waaaaay off. And of course it's in 2D.

It's just one of those "nobody can tell you what The Matrix is" situations.

I posted a quick summary of my thoughts on my DK2 on a thread here. The OP on that thread wrote his own DK2 review and others have added theirs.

Hopefully you'll get a feel for what to expect.

My gaming community Dead Men Walking (www.deadmen.co.uk) has two LANs a year, held in the town of March, near Cambridge. I'm attending the April LAN. If you are able to get there, I will be there with my DK2 and Elite and I'd be happy to let you have go. You'd have to sign up as a social attendee to the LAN (£12), but it would be cheaper than buying a DK2 (£375) sight unseen.

I've recently got the DK2 and I'm glad you posted the simulation as I have never previously seen what it 'should' look like and have been guessing at the resolution capabilities from the various posts I've read here and elsewhere. I think the simulation is pretty accurate (in terms of what I'm getting) if not a bit better. As vannibombonato said, the sense of immersion that you get is well worth the money. The only way I can describe it is that it gives me the same feeling of the 'computer wow factor' I had back in the early 80's when I played computer games (like Elite) for the first time. It really is that good despite the resolution shortcomings (and the Galaxy map navigation problems).

I am thinking about jumping in on the OR, but I was wondering if those who have tried it can tell me how accurate this "simulation" is.

Does it give you a reasonable comparison to what the experience with screen door effect and AA issues is currently?

No. Not accurate. It doesn't show screen door in the slightest, and the movement is totally inaccurate. The only thing you can get out of this, is relative pixel density maybe. I saw an interview where a comparrison was made between the Dk2, and the original doom game (pixel density). But the point of the rift, isn't that... the point, is immersion. That is where the value is. Yes, the graphics suck... is it still worth it? HELL YES. It will blow you away. If you have a top end video card, it will really be worth it. Once the CV1 comes out and IF it is 1440... Games are changed forever.

I play ED on the LOWEST possible settings, WITH judder, and play on the verge of being sick the entire time... and it is worth every penny. I will never play on a flat screen ever again. I can't wait for my new video card to come in the mail.

I gotta be honest, if it weren't for the rift, I'd not be playing ED currently. Game is to one dimensional for me, but playing an one dimensional game in three dimensions helps quite a bit

There have been times in the past few weeks where I have felt like not even logging into the game. And NOT because I have a different game ready to go that has taken my interest.. but because I was having a hard time finding something engaging to do in the game. Trading? meh... too monotonous. Bounty huting? You mean camping a navbeacon or resource extraction site? meh... Explore? what, in my viper? meh.. But after I got into the rift... even the most SIMPLE thing in the game is overwhelmingly entertaining.

I logged in yesterday and did like a dozen trading runs between two stations. When playing on a monitor, it is just a task you do in order to get money to buy a better ship. In the rift, you do it for the experience alone, the money is just a perk. I loved sitting in the docking bay for an extra 15 seconds just adoring the massive scale sitting in front of me as I try and measure the distance from the edge of my ship to the wall of the hanger. "What is it, 40? 60 feet? I wonder if I could hit it with a rock if could throw one" I love watching the sun go under the floor windows of my T6 as I come out of super cruise looking for my next destination. I think to myself "wouldn't it be cool to have my wife turn on a room heater for 5 or 8 seconds as I go over this star here".... Then I am amazed as I come in for a landing on a platform station, literally looking over my shoulder trying to judge how close the tail of myship is to the giant sail thingy sticking up out of the station as I make my way to the landing pad. When I land and sell my wares... I literally take a deep breath, like I can't believe I landed this space ship... I feel like I actually accomplished something. Heck, it is even more exciting sitting there reading the news bulletins in the station. Why? because it doesn't feel like I am playing a game, It feels like I am in space sitting in my ship.

When dog fighting, occasionally I will get SUPER close to my target, sort-of on accident and looking up through my cockpit window, I can FEEL the mass of this GIANT spaceship just a couple meters from my face that have literally made me say "WWWOOWW" out loud in my room. I felt a little internal sense of peril as I got too close. "please don't hit the anaconda, please don't hit the anaconda..... OH MY GOD I ALMOST HIT THAT ANACONDA!! CRAP, DID YOU SEE THAT?".... It's terribly satisfying and is something you literally get ZERO of, when playing on a monitor. On a monitor, you think "oops, got a little close there. No biggy, just a game, and i have shields". There's a huge difference.

I am completely fascinated with the game again... more so than the day I first started playing, by a HUGE margin. It might as well be a different game. Sorry I'm so simultaneously geeky about it, over passionate about it considering I have only been in the rift for 2 days, and so crappy with my words all at the same time. It's impossible to describe.

I came up with a base analogy I have used to try and explain it to my friends here the last couple of days, and the best I can come up with, is the Disney classic movie "Tron". Playing the game tron in the real world standing up at an arcade game is like playing ED on a monitor.... getting zapped INTO the game world by the super computer and actually being INSIDE the game battling tron yourself in the flesh... is like playing in the rift.

The only thing left to do, is to play wearing a wet suit.

Sorry I'm such a geek, but im excited.

Here's me thinking that exact same thing...then hitting that Anaconda. Skip to the end passed the "credits."

Here's the video that convinced me to get a DK2.

Agreed but not sure the graphics are as bad as you are describing. Might be your card because mine certainly looks a whole lot better than the first doom. 1440 will help but it just isn't going to be that big of a leap. I am hoping they have something up the sleeve but pretty sure that would have leaked out by now.

yeah for sure... I was just talking pixel density. It certainly looks a lot better than doom, because it was more than resolution holding the graphics back.
