Question for RIFT users

Ive never tried the rift but im getting more and more eager to place an order.
But for a game like ED, where we need to use alot of controls and commands, isnt it hard to find the right buttons/keys with the rift strapped on?

Earlier I had plans to go triple-monitors, trackIR and build several custom panels to house various controls for the game (in other words, a sort of simpit) but with all the praise going around about the rift, and the release of DK2 im having second thoughts.

So how do you guys do it? are you relying on the HOTAS buttons and the ingame menus or are you "feeling" your way across the keyboard?

Hey mate, used both the DK1 and now the DK2.
I use a X-55 hotas for most of my commands but also use voice attack since its way simpler.

With text chat implemented with beta1 I try to kind the keyboard and locate F and J "bumps* to start typing. I'm most likely going to make default phrases and use voice attack to type them.

I know that fellow podcaster Fozza would sell you the benefits of using Voice Attack software to bind certain keypresses to spoken commands.

You could also try Razer Nostromo, recommeded by other podcast buddy Allen Stroud.

DK2 and DK1 user here. I'm an amateur in this game, but have played for a while now. I use a joystick Logitech 3D Pro joystick, and am considering upgrading to an X55 :) I need more keys... I occasionally lift the Rift up when I need the keyboard.

Btw, I can strongly recommend the DK2, but just keep in mind that CV1 will be much better. DK2 is like a ship you should only fly if you can afford to loose it ;) It will not be of much use once the final consumer product gets released.

Oh, and there are some tricks needed atm to run the game in DK2 (killing a Oculus Service process and a few more things). Will probably be fixed soon.

Thanks for replies.
Im very tempted and interested in VR, and I can only imagine the immersion being absolutely breathless! This is what draws me towards it.

But there is also a charm with having custom built swithes, buttons, toggles on suitable panels mounted around me, and with heardtracking and triple monitors it also gives a very nice immersive experience, not like VR, and not as cheap as getting a DK2, but alot more practical.

Man oh man, what a difficult life where one has to choose between all the goodies ;)

Hi dk1 and now dk2 guy here. Saitek X52 pro does everything on the hotas. I leave certAin functions to be handled in the menus of the game, which I enjoy, but could be mapped also. There is a shift function available which can allow for double the controls. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Get the dk2 it's fantastic.

DK1 and DK2 dev here. Honestly, unless you have a HOTAS w/ a rift, you're gonna have a bad time. The only way to play with the rift without having to remove it is to have everything mapped to a HOTAS like the X55, X52, or Warthog.

I fly with the Warthog myself and still fumble around finding the right switch to deploy cargo scoop, etc. But most of the main controls are mapped to joystick and throttle switches within easy reach.

While the rift is immersive and all, I feel unless you have the hardware to facilitate a "no keyboard look" flight, it would be wasted.
