Question for the Asp Explorers out there.

Hi

I am currently out in the boonies in my Cobra. No complaints, its a fab exploerer ship, however I have been thinking I want to do a little mining as well whilst I am out there so I have better notes when I want to properly mine down the line.

I am tempted to fork out for an ASP to do this, however, exploring at the best of times is not really very profitable.

I have read that the asp wear and tear costs are horrible and essentially ruin the ship as an explorer (for profit). My question is, has this been exagerated, or will wear and tear take all my profits for exploration?

thanks

It is rubbish. There is someone who claims he was charged about 10x what everyone else gets charged. Bug, eye sight or memory failure I know not. It will be more than your Cobra though.
A 12 hour long distance scouting mission with a few systems fully scanned netted me (after repairs) about 0.5 million. I think the repairs came to about 10% of the income, mainly because I had 2 "scooping disagreements" with stars.

Just sold my Asp for a Clipper, think I regret it (but then I though that when I went from Cobra to Asp until the Asp was tooled up properly)

Exagerated, IMHO.

My last trip earned about 7 or 8M, with repairs of 68K and integrity of 212K (which I was charged twice due to a bug!). Whilst I would rather have not had to pay that, I don't see it as being a show stopper by any stretch of the imagination.

I went out on a 6,500ly jaunt in my Asp. I lost 2% hull through two interdictions heading out and back in. Nothing to wear and tear. If you know how to pilot you'll not damage your ship. The Asp cost me nothing to explore in that respect.

However, mining. Different story. If you hit the hull you're looking at a repair bill. And frankly there's even less money in mining than exploring, and you need more patience.

Wear and tear cost at 0% last trip I made was 800k - Exploring paid 5 Mil - Hope that clears it up.

I have an expensive scoop too! (7mil) which pushed up the wear and tear but I still make some cash

The Asp 0% Ship Integrity Repair is 1272k credits. If you get that low, it is cheaper to buy a new Asp.

Pretty much this, and not only what he^ said but mining along the way will cut down your jump range with your FSD as your tonnage increases.

OP - Asp is the best exploration ship by far. Cost of repairs is moderate (more than a Cobra, of course) but in no way crippling. It is a sturdy craft with unmatched jump distance, so you can get to where you need to go fast, i.e., skip inhabited systems and very economical on fuel. I'm not into any serious exploration, but my son swears by Asp for exploration. I used Asp for about 3 weeks and will be buying it back when I accumulate more cash after splurging for Python.
