General / Off-Topic Question for Veteren Frontier Developers

How on earth was Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 made?!

We all have seen with other series where they go from late 90s/2000s 2D to the first 3D (such as Caesar 3 to Caesar 4, Simcity 4 to SimCity Societies, Zoo Tycoon to Zoo Tycoon 2). What tends to happen is due to the complexities of 3D games, especially with older hardware from back then, that we would see things like:
  • Smaller Maps
  • Less Content
  • Worse or Simpler Graphics
  • Takes a very long time to make

With RCT3, however, you made a game with just as big maps as RCT2 (both 256x256), great graphics for its time, much more content, and did it within 2 years of the second expansion for RCT2 coming out!

How was this even possible? Massive funding from old Atari? Reused assets from RCT2? How many souls were sold to make this?

Then of course Planet Coaster comes along and does the impossible again, making for another great game!

I remember seeing a video of the RCT3 development on the, I think, RCT3 site. Though this site is offline I might be able to still find the videos.
