Question from an 'Elite' Virgin

I love the whole game discription for 'Elite: Dangerous' and have kept track of the game throughout kickstarter with the Dev Blogs and Alpha videos, everything looks amazing.

My question is, Will this game be restricted to the small vessels we see in the game currently? or will larger ships become player controllable? (Capital ships, cruisers etc)

thanks for your time :)

No large cruisers/capital ships, as they'd make it a very different game from the lone Han Solo/Boba Fett/Malcolm Reynolds type of experience that is intended.
However you will be able to play largish trade ships like the Anaconda and Panthers as seen here:

I the first Elite only one ship was flyable which was the Cobra Mk3.

The second, Frontier Elite 2 (or FE2) and third, Frontier First Encounters, almost every ship was flyable. The biggest being the Panther Clipper which was huge.

I imagine that the new game will see the return on ships like the Panther, although if that ship remains the biggest flyable is yet to be seen. ;)

I want to see really huge NPC capital ships. And I men colossal. The kind that takes a minute to fly from one point to another. That'd be awesome.

In a recent interview, DB has said there will be ships bigger than the Anaconda available, but not much on the detail - he alluded to the type of ship designed to squeeze through the Panama Canal, and said there will be something similar which can just squeeze through the docking port at a space station, with liberal application of WD-40 and a docking computer.

Not any much more detail than than at the moment though.

That could apply to the Panther, which appears to be bigger than the Anaconda in width and maybe height as well.

While there are large ships in the game (Panther Clipper springs to mind should it come back), its important to remember Elite never really tried to simulate large battleships.

The large ships in Elite in its various forms were for trading, not for combat, although they necessarily came with a lot of placs to put weaponry for defence of the precious cargo.

I guess we'll see where FD goes for this iteration of the game, but historically there no large scale fighting ships that were player controllable.

The alpha does have the "Impeccable" which is a large NPC battle ship though.

Toad.

There will be 25 ships of various sizes that the player will be able to control when the game is initially released.

That could apply to the Panther, which appears to be bigger than the Anaconda in width and maybe height as well.

I think David was talking about a ship even bigger that the Panther in that video since he said that its a ship that they haven't revealed yet and we know from one of the dev diaries or it might have been mentioned in one of the newsletters that the Panther will be in the game.
