Question from potential Xbox player. Can you help answer his Q's?

I'm on an Xbox forum promoting E: D and was asked the following by one of the members:

I know there are plenty of people that love sims without goals or stories ( train sims are hugely popular and we have farming sims, tow trucks, forklifts, etc) so I get the appeal to some people but I need a goal to be doing all the grinding beyond new ships/gear and starting over which is why the patch looks appealing (factions being added, etc).

I do have a question that will also apply to the console......the description says "partial" controller support and I'm seeing people grabbing Hotas to play. Can everything be mapped to a 360 controller?

Can anyone assist with those questions?

There's no way you could map EVERY potential keybind on an x-box controller without the use of modifier keys or something of that nature. Sorry i can't be of more help.

actually, it is possible

when messing around on the controll layouts, i found by accident that you could assign some controls to pressing 2 button together and it would no interfere with other controls that use one of the buttons used for the double-press.

so for a controller, you could have one button be a sort of "Function" key

for example: if they set Y as the function button, then you could use your triggers for your primary or secondary fire, but while holding Y and pressing the trigger it could be for deploying your landing gear and cargo hatch

It should be possible, but of course many functions would be accessed with the UI panels. For example, on my keyboard I have key bindings for cargo scoop, landing gear, lights etc., whereas with a controller one would have to access these from the menu. But it should be doable, after all it will be the very same full game on the XBox, with all the same functions.

Yes rebinding every possible key to the xbox gamepad IS possible. But you will never be able to remember all the possible combinations of alt-function keys. Or maybe you would, iunno. I know i use an xbox pad and voice attack on the PC and have reasonable success.

Always remembering that the XBoxx One will accept a USB keyboard as a valid input device.

I have modifier keys on my keyboard and mouse setup. It's muscle memory after about 5 hours play time.

Mission and Story is plenty there and there is a lot going on that you always can read up on the news in-Game. Mission System isn't all that great in the Moment, but it gets an overhaul soon we don't know all that much about so I its hard to say. Other then that there are Community Goals, and Power Play should be bring a lot Mission and story driven content. But that too Is something we have to see first how it turns out.
But we should have plenty of time to test it before the Xbox Version gets released ;)

And as far as Controller goes: I actually play this Game only with a Xbox360 Controller, the only times I grab my Keybord is when I have to type the Name of a System in the Galaxy Map. And I really like it, it works great for me!
Alltough I did a lot of rebinding, made many many multiple Button bindings (there is not Button on my controller only used for one command) and I don't really know if you can do bindings to the same extend in the Xbox version you can do in the PC Version (Console Games have the habbit of not letting you rebind anything after all). But there are two default settings and they can certainly work too, but I guess it comes down a lot to preference.

Kinect could be interesseting if you have it. Again something we will see if and how FD does implement it, but theres a great potential for Headtracking and Voice Command.

Straight up, if he needs goals to feel like he's progressing, he will not like the game.
Counting on a patch that isn't out yet is not wise either.
Everything else about this game aside, if he wants to sit in different pilot chairs, and can find fun in doing only that, then this is the game for him.
IMHO.
I still enjoy this game, it's the only game I'm playing ATM.

Depends only on developer. For instance, PC version of IL-2 had excellent mapping editor, quite similar to what we have in ED - and it's XBox version and it's several successors also have quite similar editor where you can assign anything you want to any key or combination.

While I have X52 Pro, I do not see any problems with mapping XBox controller. Yes, one or two buttons need to act as modifiers, but it should come naturally, mode dependent (UI panels, systems, etc.).

Not sure but can you plug a keyboard into the Xbox? Then you could use the standard keys for control along with your controller. Amazing they still don't allow a mouse on a gaming console, or apparently anything other than the limited controller.

Yes to everything above and also a little bit more...

When you lower your undercarriage your spaceship goes into "Landing Mode" and it's possible to assign keys especially for manoeuvring onto your landing pad. The truth is that although it is possible to assign everything to a single joypad, PCs are so flexible that it's easy to stick another USB controller into it to expand your control options. I use a XB360 gamepad and I steer clear of my keyboard because I use a VR headset, but I also use footpedals, and Voice Attack for non-essential commands.

I can help with the controller question since that's what I use exclusively.

On the pc version(it might change on the console version idk), you can map pretty much everything you need to a controller. The game allows you to map a command to 2 keys instead of the usual one. This is one of the few games I've seen that does that. The menus also work fine, you don't even need to pick up a keyboard, unless you want to type a messafe out.

On the 360 controller, L3 doesnt have any use, so I mapped a lot of stuff to L3+ other buttons. That covered most of the stuff. I also changed the A button from cycle hardpoints and made that another mode toggle. Between L3 and A+ eveey other button I was able to get everything I needed mapped onto the controller.

Theres no vibration, which is why I think it's listed as partial controller support on steam.
