question: is it possible to switch between VR/2D, while playing ?

hello,
keywords are "while playing".

of course, this would be rather convenient.
maybe someone tried this seriuosly and
can give an answer.

thanks

Is theoretically possible.
Through the in game 3d option in graphics, set it to off for 2d or HMD whatever for VR.

This can crash the game or bork some other things off, and since you will most likely be using different settings as well, switching like this on the fly is not practical, at all.

The most practical and most reliable is actually to leave game and use D.r Kaii's profile swithcer utility.

It's best to choose what for a session.
But as someone with over 2000 hours of ED in VR I have yet to have or find a reason to play 2d since I got it.

I've never once had it crash the game using the graphics option method, I use this feature fairly regularly. I did find myself using 2D more often recently when I was doing long passenger runs and didn't feel like staring into the abyss for 10+ minutes or pushing the headset up. Easier just to switch to 2D for a session, grind out some credits, then get back to whatever I was doing before in VR.

I play a lot of 2d and in vr, and would also love if this was easy to do this ingame. I'm currently using dr.kaii's app to switch modes which requires to restart the game.

If it was possible to switch various settings just by putting on the HMD and taking it off would be nice - although it might be annoying some times if it was slow at doing it, but maybe with a 10 second delay or alternative a shortcut for switching between sets of settings.

You can: Options -> Graphics -> 3D -> Off [for 2D] /HMD (Headphones) [for VR]

You'll have to tweak your display settings after that for full screen/resolution/etc., but it's just a couple quick changes and you're set.

Would be nice to be able to do that with a voice command or assigned keyboard/joystick command...
Taking headset off to go back to 2d and navigate galaxy map et al is quite a chore

Why can't you navigate the Galaxy map with your joystick?

Personally, I find using the galaxy map in 2D with a mouse to be far more intuitive. For Distant Worlds 2, I'll probably enter the waypoints in 2D and save them as bookmarks, for easy reference in VR.

If your using a rift and launch ED from Dash, just pin the windows provided OSK (On Screen Keyboard) inside the cockpit.

I mean if it works for you, sure, but that's about the most complicated way of doing it.

Crazy Talk! There is no need to do that at all!
Crazy talk maybe but I'd hoped that someone here would at least point me in the direction of a place where i could learn how to navigate the galaxy map without being such a numpty in the eyes of someone so superior as you.

Cheers

I'll take my headset off and use my mouse till I find an alternative... like asking voice attack to go 2d while I take headset off (-:

Someone asked you what problems you were having with joystick navigation, you didn't respond.

Bind pitch\orbit to main stick.
Bind translate X\Y to a hat.
Bind Zoom in\out and translate Z to another.

Make sure the map grid is on.

The center of the grid and your view there is a blue circle, once you have navigated close and fairly zoomed in to a system <10l-20ly give or take. The star drops a pin and a shadow on the grid.
Place the grid shadow in the cirlce, and that's how you select a star system with controller, and is the only way that works in VR.
It will take a while to get used to, but after a while you will.

Also to help further.
Bookmarks, learn to use them, learn to love them.

Thanks @TorTorden
THANK YOU - I'll give it a try with my non pro x52...

seems other folk who want an alternative to Joystick find the galaxy map difficult too so any help is appreciated

Love the new ED update tho... felt confident enough the other day to pay for my insurance (-:
