Question: Mic's, speakers etc

I'm winging up with a buddy who's new to the game.

Therefore I need a mic.

If it's a headset that includes phones will the speakers stop working?

It'd also be cool if i could just hear my bud through a single earpiece but keep the speakers for effects etc.

Basically i know f all about teamspeaking environments and tech.

Most gaming headsets will, on being plugged in (assuming they have been set up properly), cause the external speakers to be switched off (the computer stops outputting to them). However, decent gaming headphones also can sound awesome; you my not want to go back to the speakers!

Yes the speakers should stop working. Buy a headset (phones/mic combo) Don't cheap out either as the wires on cheap ones are... cheap.
All sounds will come through so you'd use window's Mixer to get the volumes comfortable. We use Steam's group voice chat, it has WAAAAY better sound than the ingame chat.

So no worries there about losing speakers etc

You might be able to separate the audio sources to different outputs, though I'm not entirely sure how you'd do it. It'd probably just be easier to get a mic, though it would sound a lot better if you got headphones too. I wouldn't suggest a headset, because they are typically overpriced and cheaply made. You can get a decent set of headphones under $50, then a cheap mic that attaches to the headphones.
