Question on 64 bit, 8.5 gig download that just happened / Horizons

I do apologize if this has been posted before. I've spent several minutes plowing through the confusion titles concerning what might be my question but "question on this" means reading every single one of them, so I'm trying to make the title a bit more relevant to my question.

So after several hours of download I fire up the game last night, noted that I could select 32 bit and 64 bit version of E:D. Selected the 64 bit and continued what I was doing before the download was started.

I did notice that the map and panel 1 changed dramatically; I had to constantly re-engineer my route to my destination. Once I figured out how to fiddle with the settings on the new filters everything else continued normally as before.

Here's the odd part: In the galaxy map, landable plants were marked, and once I finally made it to a base with outfitting, I saw my Cobra already had a planetary landing suite installed. I was a bit surprised one would be there since I hadn't gotten Horizons yet. Also, no hanger or SRV available. If you can't get the hangers for SRV's, why include a landing suite? I hadn't tried landing yet but I have to assume that even through I don't have Horizons yet, landing on bases would be my only current option. That's a guess, mind you, I hadn't had a chance to test this yet.

So here are my two questions:
If I have the landing suite, even though I don't have Horizons yet, can I still land at bases on planets? I assume a base is my only option, not "wherever you want".

On Steam, I assume this'll be a separate purchase and separate start up click-to-launch thingy (as if it were a completely new game you just bought), correct?

Again, I apologize if this has been answered before. Once Horizons comes out on Steam, yeah, I'll get it.

Correct, also in 1.5 all ships have the landing module installed. No in 1.5 you cannot land at all, you'll get thrown out of SC close to planets, same as before. Also the hangar module is in 1.5 if you equiped a ship with one in 2.0, but it can't be loaded with gear.

In Steam it is a separate purchase and another separate game, correct.

Understood, thanks. It's "teasing" me. :S While waiting for a response to my original post, I took the Cobra out to Potriti's small planet, yes, several bases offering themselves as temping landing spots, got into the "planet flying mode", got all excited, then hit the "body exclusion zone" and blasted back out into space with my tail tucked between my legs.

To add insult to injury, a pirate (NPC) interdicted me as I was about to head back to Yakabugia and managed to blow me up.

Some days, I tell ya...

Anyway, ok, so just keep doing the normal stuff I'm doing until the upgrade comes into play on Steam. That'll be on a weekend since the download takes that long on my DSL line.

Sorry, follow-up question I should have asked this morning and just thought of on the way home from work this evening:

When I dropped in around the planet and the package kicked into play, was I in "orbit"? Also, would it stay that way with no other touch of the controls?
