Question on Bounties?

I was prospecting in a Sirius controlled sector and came upon a guarded site. Before I realised they weren't illegal, I had shot down the first sentry and got a bounty on my head. I also shot down the other two and got another bounty for checking out the containers they were guarding. Not wanting to lose my A rated Python and over 102mcr exploration data I looked around for a nearby system where I wasn't wanted with a shipyard and headed there. I bought a Sidewinder, added the basics to get me back to said system and hung around the beacon until someone scanned me and shot me down.Being a previously law abiding citizen I am not certain of the rules in regard to this, does it mean that now I am clear to enter Sirius system space in my Python or am I still wanted there?.

When you get a bounty on your head it'll show up in the Transactions tab in the left-hand panel. There's a cooldown associated with it, usually less than 10 minutes, and you'll see that time begin to count down. Jump to a nearby system (doesn't matter where, just outside of the system in which you have a bounty), wait until your bounty says "on h-jump," and it'll become a dormant bounty. You will no longer be wanted in that system (i.e. shot on sight by authorities) but you'll want to pay off the bounty at a station soon.

Did you hand in your exploration data before getting killed?

Oof, good question ...

So even though I got myself killed and that pilot claimed it I suppose, you're saying I will still have a dormant bounty on my head that I still have to pay off?. By the way I did hand in my Exploration data prior to going back and being destroyed.

To actually clear a bounty, you need to be blown up by an authority ship of the faction issuing the bounty. Not hard to do outside of a station, just ram one of those patrol ships a couple times, and they'll be glad to put you down.

Otherwise, yes, the bounty will just go dormant until it expires, or you misbehave again in the same location.

If you even can pay off a bounty.

I have a 180 CR bounty on my head for 7 days for not moving away from a docking pad quickly enough. 30,000,000 CR cost for ship being blown up. But far, far worse: I can't even do anything for my faction anymore? That's worse than crippling. That's looking for a new game crippling. [mad]

On the bright side though, at least you didn't overreact with attention-seeking melodrama! [blah]

I stuck around the system beacon scanning everything until someone scanned me and then attacked me, at first I shot back and got another fine for attacking him then realised he's not very good and maybe I end up killing him by accident instead so just knocked her out of gear laid there and let him destroy me. Does that not count or does it have to be a faction ship as you posted?.

If it shows up in the transactions tab of your left-hand panel, you still have a bounty. Just pay it off at a station. Or is that somehow not an option here? I guess I haven't acquired enough bounties to know the various circumstances.

If the bounty was properly collected, it'll disappear from the transaction tab. To complete the removal, you'll need to go to the faction's station and pay the fine. That'll get rid of it for good. Otherwise, the fine will convert back into a bounty in 7 days. If you don't plan on being in that faction's systems after 7 days, you can ignore it.

<edit> No, you can't pay off a bounty. But once it's converted into a fine or legacy fine, you can pay that. </edit>

Weird. When I logged in again, the bounty was still there. I went to the planetary base to run some tests. The base just refused to scan me.

I was then disconnected and when I reconnected again the bounty was a legacy fine. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad of it, but I admit to some confusion. How exactly did it get converted to a legacy fine, I wonder.
