Question on how Steam linked accounts work

Does anyone here have ED purchased through Steam? I wondering if it still requires you to create a regular account on Frontier's site or if it logs in directly based on your Steam account. I currently have the standalone version and I'm wondering how things will work starting tomorrow if we use the keys provided.

Any insight is appreciated!

I purchased ED in Steam and it does NOT carry the Steam credentials with it.
When starting the game in steam it simply pops up another launcher for ED - first you have to log in and then you have to start the game.
Rather tiresome, but it works.
