Newcomer / Intro Question on Liberating Slaves

I have a couple of questions on slaves trading

1) Is liberating slaves considered "illegal"? To me I would think its a good thing?

2) If I do need to smuggle slaves in, what should I do? Do i start running my ship on silent mode? Will that take care of the whole ship detection thingy?

Appreciate the responses :)

Dealing in slaves is no different than dealing in any illegal cargo......I mean the procedure is the same....if you are scanned the fine is roughly double the sell price on the black market..... The way to avoid scans at star port seems to be fly away and line up with the letter box and fly straight in .... Scan doesn't have time to complete.... Tho you need to avoid police scans.... I don't bother with illegals if I can avoid them....too much hassle....

I only do illegal things for outposts. I worked hard for my rep, and don't intend on risking it for 1 minor mission.
I have done both the silent running and speed techniques, and would advise you give then a go without an illegal cargo first. The speed one I tried in reverse coming out of a station to be sure I knew the min stopping distance.

If you're going into a Starport and is being scanned, there isn't much room for you to avoid that. Suck it up.
If you're going away and leaving the starport, boost away quickly!

I to not deal in slaves FULL STOP unless liberating.

But it is a bit to easy to get past station scans these days (I have NEVER used silent running), it's the the in system police you should be worried about.

There is a huge difference between slaves and Imperial Slaves. Currently that difference is not being played out in-game but will become more apparent when, say, passenger travel comes in. Imperial Slaves would need to be transported as passengers, sometimes VIP passengers. 'Freeing' such a slave would not gain you any thanks and said 'freed' slave may likely either seek compensation from you or possibly even put a bounty on your head. The following is from the DDA and throws some light on this:

Slavery and the Empire

Generally speaking, An Imperial citizen cannot be forced into slavery; instead they sell themselves into servitude, often as a way of bettering their situation – slave owners have a burden of care for slaves, including resolving issues the person brings with them.

Slaves also have a pretty good chance of regaining their freedom, often returning to free society in a better situation then when they left it.

Finally, slavery of this nature is not looked down upon; in a society where honour is all important, selling yourself into slavery - to clear a debt for example – would be seen as a noble act.

That’s not to say that it’s all sweetness and roses; no one in the Empire wants to be a slave and treatment can vary tremendously from owner to owner. But for the most part, slavery acts as somewhat as a safety net in a society that in many ways is extremely uncaring for an individual’s plight.

Great thread - implying at least to me, that liberating an Imperial Slave, is generally considered against the will of the slave (damned Fundamentalists always imposing their will on someone else.. geez...).

That said, your blackbox should have an entry regards your mission, and if you are transporting an 'average' slave to freedom, seems that security forces should take that into consideration before blasting you to bits, or accessing a fine.

"Liberated" from a secure and quite possibly a comfortable position where they have dignity and value, dumped in a remote space station (presumably non-Imperial) without a penny and no options ... no wonder they are peeved :)

Generally, if the station has a black market, you won't have too much difficulty in sneaking in past the police. I've found that at more "secure" stations, even spamming chaff, disabling every module not necessary for flight, and running silent still results in being scanned by the cops and booking it the hell outta there.

Yeah, the speed approach isn't too difficult, it's just crucial you don't get close to the station until you're lined up. You don't even have to go very fast, just a normal steady straight line in will do. Even if they start scanning, they're unlikely to have time to finish it before you get through the letterbox.

That said, when dealing with Slaves (blew up a Wanted craft, he dropped several cannisters of Slaves, I couldn't just leave them there to die in space!) I did make a complete mess of it before. Was doing a quick entry to a station to avoid the scan, but there was a dropship very slow in the letterbox. In my effort to squeeze in to one side of him, I forgot to request docking. Oops! Tried to turn around quickly, so then I was blocking the letterbox. Panic, trying to boost out from the letterbox, but forget to raise my landing gear; so I'm going so slowly I get scanned and a massive fine for carrying slaves. D'oh.

Hey thanks for sharing - perhaps a sadist here but I like hearing stories from others showing that I aint the only one who whose blood pressure rises to critical, from time to time ;)
