Question on pricing for game

Hello Frontier,

I hope this message reaches the right person, but it’s one that I feel needs to be heard. I sent this message to customer service and they sent me here. Here it goes:

Hello Frontier,

First off, I would like to say that I am a huge fan of Jurassic World Evolution. I had left a positive review on Steam, which was received well. I have encouraged multiple friends to purchase it and have been really excited about the updates and DLC that you all have been producing up till now. Unfortunately, I have an issue that I am hoping you will be able to help me out with.

I saw today that Steam is having one of it's crazy sales so I went on to see if I could try and get a few games while they were on sale. I remembered Dr. Wu's DLC was out and went to check it out, when I was blown away by what I saw on the store page of Jurassic World. The base game cost 13$!

When I saw this I couldn't believe my eyes. Just a few months ago, this game was sold for 55$ or 60$ (for the deluxe edition.) Seeing the difference frustrated me slightly, knowing that I spent an extra 35+$ for a game that, while I loved it, has gotten cheaper despite it needing quite a few improvements at release. This issue isn't even what really is upsetting though. I understand sales happen and prices drop (this exponential drop just a few months after making everyone pay a lot more seems a little bit excessive, nonetheless,) but my real issue is the now PREMIUM edition of Jurassic World Evolution.

When the game came out, I was going to buy the game full price no matter what. When I saw I could get more dinosaurs in the Deluxe Edition I did not hesitate to purchase that one instead. I knew future DLC was going to come out but I was excited to get the Deluxe Edition and have everything the game had to offer at the time. If there had been a premium edition when it came out, I definitely would have gotten that one! But there wasn't.

Now there is. It contains the base game and the three expansions, and how much is it? 38$. When I saw that I could not believe it. Granted, I am happy I had the game since release time, so that adds value to what I paid, but the price difference still stung. But you know what, that isn't even my big issue. I just want the expansions that I don't have. So knowing that I got the Deluxe Edition, I figured this should at least get me the bundle, solely with the DLC that I am missing, a lot cheaper. When I added the premium edition to my cart, guess what- "You cannot purchase this bundle unless you have not purchased any of the items within the bundle." I might be paraphrasing but the point is clear.

I purchased the game full price.
I purchased it as a Deluxe item.
The price has dropped to the price of a mobile game.
The DLC is nicely packaged in a beautiful bundle of the premium variety. Yet can't be bought to include the previous purchases within the edition.
There is ZERO support for anyone who purchased it at full price, and ZERO discount as well.

It is almost like those who purchased the game originally, mind you, only a few months ago, have been punished with
1. A game that started with unfinished updates.
2. A Deluxe Edition that would prevent the future purchase of a premium version.
3. A sobering reality that you can purchase the entire game with all DLC for 20$ less than the base game was just a little while ago.

This precedence that is being set is off-putting and could be catastrophic for future games and updates for those games. It isn't showing value to the customers that gave you the most support when it was needed.

I hope my long point is clear. I believe that there should be something that can be worked out for those who purchased the game full price and especially for those who purchased the Deluxe version.

I love this game and I love what you all are doing with it. I just don't like what has happened on the financial side of it.

This message is sent in hopes of a little support for those who bought full price and early on.

Thanks for listening.

-C

Wait… Why do you want to go for the premium edition? I don’t think it will include any future DLCs. Does it?

I think it only includes the base game, Deluxe Pack, Dr.Wu, and Cretaceous Pack.

The total of Dr.Wu + Cretaceous = $20. Why do you want to pay $38 to get the $20??? Am I missing something?

I have been a non-stop whiner lately for the prices and loyal customers issue. I can feel you.

For the On-sale side of thing, it would be better to think of it this way – if more people is going to buy the game on-sale. It will be good to us too! We love the game. We want to see it keeps growing, it surely does help by having more people buying it, isn’t it?

Games go on sale it's a normal thing, nobody forces you to buy a game when it releases at full price, you always have the option to place it in your wishlist and wait for sales and buy it then.

I have multiple games in my library that I only bought on sales, games that I really wanted when they released but where I could afford to wait for them to go on sale, because I had other new games to play.
I also have a lot of games that I bought at full price, simply because I wanted to play them right away.

I never feel bad in either way, I know that the games that I bought at full price will eventually be sold in sales very cheap but it doesn't bother me, I also buy quite a lot of games on sale and it balances out in the end.

Looks like we should have all waited 6 months. $38 for everything... ? The grand total as it stands now at normal price is $80 for everything. For players that pre-ordered, they've had to endure a lot since the beginning, and no breaks on the pay-side of things. It is what it is.

All that I'm going to say is that at least a couple comments will be inbound to tell you that you're totally wrong about not feeling good about this. It's always like that. Being on the home turf here, especially, so that's just the way it goes.

"You should have waited and not bought it then. It's your own fault!"

... ;)

As for me? I got the 'Deluxe Edition' as well. I was on the fence about the "Cretaceous Pack", but have since decided that I'll pay for additional things only after many base game improvements have been made. That's fair. So, maybe another year or so.... I hope. It'll get there.

You are right. It just seems so quick for the base game to drop down to such a low price so quickly. I might just be complaining pointlessly, but just some sort of discount for the two dlcs that are in the premium edition would be nice. You are right, though.

That’s really all I’m trying to say. I get that prices drop but there was very little reason for getting it so quickly, when it drops in price by 75%+ after release. I don’t know really, I just was hoping frontier might consider giving those who supported the game in the first place some sort of discount on the later dlcs. Just strange is all.

So, you're basically saying that you'd like to trade in your $60 'Deluxe Edition' for the $38 'Premium Edition', plus credit?

I like that idea.

I really should have waited had I known it would drop way down so soon with all the extras. Keeping up with this game, and all the online craziness that has come with it, has been a weird experience, to say the least.

I agree the sale will encourage more to buy. But I was just hoping that we could “complete our collection” for a discount, seeing as we paid full price for something that dropped so quickly.
The 38$ was for the premium edition. Discounting each item. I was saying that those who already purchased should be able to pay for the premium edition-minus previous purchases- and get the discount provided by it. But you make a good point.

Yes. That would be ideal. But I know that can’t happen. If I could even just get a discount for the dlcs within the premium edition, that would be nice.

I know nothing will come of it but I just think frontier should know what precedent it is setting. The game is great and they are doing a good job with the content, Its just that there should have been more thought put into the pricing and discounts. That’s all

We should go grab some games on-sale now and show off on other games’ forum. That’s exactly what I’m going to do next!

I need a revenge!

It's not the deluxe edition preventing you from getting the premium version, you couldn't if you had only the base game as well. The price difference is there so people will buy the expensive one, both premium and deluxe.

The deluxe edition is more expensive than game the base game, but still cheaper than the base game and the deluxe DLC. The same happens with the current premium version: it is expensive, but still cheaper than the base game and the 3 DLCs.

The fair thing would be (maybe) to have a "Premium upgrade" DLC pack, with the same criteria: cheaper than the sum.
