Question on "Safe" Logout

I've been searching around and have been unable to find a clear answer on this.

What is the "Safe" way to log out? I log out while docked in a station. I have been disconnected a few times (In Eranin 2 federal distress signal for example) and notice, when logging back in, that I'm usually out of combat and somewhat safe.

So what exactly are the semantics of exiting the game while in combat, super-cruise, etc?

Mmmh that the cowards can run away in the middle of a fight to avoid the defeat, and the insurance costs
Seriously, it would be useful some kind of +1 stat - as if you killed them - if your target quit the game to save his money :(

Hmmm that doesn't seem fair, considering I haven't seen any sort of logout timer.

PvP aside, I guess this means that if my girlfriend needs me to leave my office/spaceship for something (Usually to squash a bug :p) I don't have to fly all the way to a station and dock.

On my opinion, there should be short delay ship stays in space if diconnected/quitted, and more longer delay if there is another CMDR´s near you (in contact range) or attacking you.

If things stay as they are, everybody is just gonna unplug their modem when things get too hot. Those that wont, will be in disadvantage (those that unplugged can log back in almost instantly too, having element of suprise if happening to same instance).

This will absolutely be the case.

I think a 10 - 30 second timer when not engaged in combat would work for logging out in space. When engaged in combat, Maybe have something like 60 seconds to have some sort of safety net for disconnects, but to discourage pulling the modem cord.

There are plans in a design doc somewhere, to prevent player log-outs as a way to escape combat. One way mentioned was having the player's ship float in the same area for a very short amount of time, so it was still at risk of destruction. This might apply to other bad situations a commander gets into, like getting trapped in a black hole gravity well, or too hot an entry to planet atmosphere. Logging out to save your ship in those cases are no less a cheat than logging out in combat.

Obviously there's no way to tell if a player logged out, pulled the 'Net cable, or their ISP had a hiccup. Not everyone is on a stable connection, but they'll have an offline-only mode if it makes this protection against intentionally logging out too painful. The entire P2P networking design of this game is predicated on everyone eventually having reliable 'Net connections.

As for non-combat, I often log out in deep space when I'm either too tired to get to a station, or want to remain near one of the conflict zones. Either the game always logs you back in a "safe" area when you've logged out that way, or I've been lucky. In deep space between planets, beacons, and other points of interest, the odds of having someone else sharing your instance bubble when you pop back in, are pretty low.

Given my experiences on hunting withouth limits or care for credits in my missile Anaconda at Freeport...

Sounds about right, about 10 secs wont be enough to save me when I boost inside behind the target, and slam the back wall (unlike save most likely now can do).

Ofc ship could be totally stopped when disconnected/quitted/saved in space for that limited time, too.

On the otherhand, I would have been able to kill many of my targets in 10 secs (if my missiles had reached them in time, ofc, dependts on distance and speeds).

I'm pretty certain DayZ has a log off timer for this very reason. I played DayZ with a few mates on another forum and we always made sure we went somewhere safe (usually some bushes in the middle of nowhere) before logging off.

Logging out in SC works well.
