Fiction Question on the official lore

Whats the status of Earth. Do countries still exist, I know there was a war and the planet was decimated for them most part and now it's a luxury spa type world with strict access and trying to leave it to nature to re-build (iirc).
Also who invented the FSD should the countries thing be applicable or was it found by alien race, all I'm essentially asking is how did we go from a good 100+ countries trying to kill each other to "You know what let's up the scale and have 1 faction per planet".

Rather big time strategy player here so I'm interested on the technology advance and how it happened and "who" got it first if that's a thing. Also this is a quiet board so I thought I'd try and inject some life

Hi Alex,

In effect there was 'World War III' in and around the 2040s, a devastating nuclear holocaust caused by multi-government conflict over energy use.

When civilisation emerged from the ashes in the 2060s the power of governments had been radically diminished and corporations (already powerful before the war) became the dominant command and control organisations on the planet.

By the 22nd century 'countries' were a concept consigned to the history books. The corporations ran everything - the forerunner of the Federation as we know it today.
