Powerplay question regarding "defecting"

kinda "noob" question.

the thing that holds me off from powerplay, is that i always miss to ideal day to join to have at least the minimum rank for benefits - because you can only rank up one a week.

now, can i circumvent that by joining one of the powers, collect 200+ merits and then just defect to my desired power?
will i then get the second rank based on the merits taken over?

erm
did you really read the question?
Nope, this won't work. You can only defect once every seven days,...
when i join a faction for one day, grind merits for it, and defect right away, how does this conflict "only once every seven days" - as i do it only once?
, and your merit count is halved upon defection.
i wrote that i grind merrits up to 200+, which is DOUBLE of the requirement of Rank2. So me question was: "is my rank assigned by the merrits i bring over - which are then still >100"

I'm not aware of anyone ever trying that but I would be a bit surprised if you could promote yourself during a cycle from rank 1 to 2 like that. What I do know is that defecting to another power while holding rank 5 and even with enough merits to be still over 10k after defection will only start you at rank 4, so if that's an actual consistent rule and you just always start one rank lower (doesn't get lower than 1 of course) it won't work.

You are overthinking this probably, just pledge to whatever power you actually want to be with and quickly do the 100 merits (i.e. by just killing 4 hostile PP ships in a hostile control system). This cycle is half over already anyway. Or get in touch with the organised player group for your wish power if you want to really get into PP.

ok, thats more the info i wanted, thanks.

actually, i have joined Grom just at the right time, so i am currenltly ranked "2" and the question was more theocrafting,
since i realised that beeing pledged to Grom currently yields no benefit for me (the 2% extra money from bounties is not even covering the 3% loss from having an npc hired that i can't use in my python)

only tried it to see how much impact it has beeing pledged just to get access to the pp module after 4 weeks.

now -
i am a noob in powerplay, because had only participated in it when it came out - the powers still had been distributed relative evenly, and the ones with interesting weapons had been ontop. got me one pacifier and two hammers during that time.
these days, i kinda want access to the swarm missiles and the APAs - but i don't see any BENEFIT for me, in joining either YLR or Patreus for those 4 weeks each.

Do i need to use PA's to benefit even the slightest bit from a reduced ammo reload cost?
Do i need to PvP to benefit from a reduced Rebuy, since i never risk my ship to beginn with?

all that for the increased chance to be attacked in systems outside of a powers influence - and even more in open play.

but thats offtopic - i think my question was answered.

People that just want certain modules usually just go shopping for a month regardless of what the power stands for or personal benefits from pledging there. You don't need to be pledged to LYR to benefit from reduced buying prices (and rebuys because of that). It's a passive effect of that power. So no matter if or whom you are pledged to all modules and ships are 15% off in LYR exploited or controlled systems.

About the threat of attacks, NPCs from other powers will basically only attack you if you carry merit cargo, are wanted in the system they protect or have combat merit claims. If you want the exact conditions just read the 2.2 patch notes. Outside of that they might interdict you but do nothing after scanning you. The threat of players is another topic of course especially if you are pledged to a power like Grom that doesn't have many friends in certain places ;)
