Newcomer / Intro Question regarding Multiplayer

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying this and I know it's an MMO of sorts. I have a policy against MMO's but that policy centers around one specific aspect and I think this may be an exception to the rule. So, here is my question. Is there anything similar to traditional MMO "Raid" mentality in the game? My biggest concern is these engagements that take hours at a time. Can I come and go as I please or does progressing in the game require hours long time commitments?

Based on the videos I've seen, I'm very interested and that is the only question I really have remaining. Thanks for your help.

So far there are no raids or something like that. You also dont have to do any quests to progress in this game (maybe to gain rank but thats optional and barly gives benefits). In the next big update wings get implementet to make playing together easier, maybe they will come with some new quests. But I can only recommend getting the game, there is no multiplayer requiered if you dont want to and there are no quests that cant be done within an hour at most.

At this state it is extremely difficult to even work with other players. The MMO piece should be introduced with the "wings" 1.2 update. For now there really isn't any mechanic for raiding, working in a team or killing a "boss" together as you see from other MMOs like WOW.

The game is definitely worth the buy, but you will be working alone until future updates are released. Come and go as you please :)

Ok, well I may wait until that update and see what comes then. I want to buy a flight stick for Kerbal anyway and I might as well wait till I can use it for this game too. One more question, is there a limited demo?

I am confused by your initial question and later response. There isn't necessarily a requirement to spend long hours. You can come and go as you please.
The game is in part a space flight simulator, so there is some time spent going from solar system to solar system, but apart fro some missions (which are optional) that make take some time to complete, you can play in say one or two hour spurts, and get some fighting or some trading or some exploring or even some shorter missions done.

What you probably want is "solo mode", which is an option whenever you play. This is by no means a typical MMO, you play on your own time... nobody forces you to do anything. Of course there can be that "one more trade run" problem...

I've just started playing and when I get time on the game, the "One more trade run" is a killer for me, nearly been late for work a few times....

There is the single player combat demo. It will walk you through flight, targeting, and then progressively more difficult combat scenarios.

I don't think you can play those missions without actually buying the game, those missions are ment to teach you some of the basic skills you need to play the game like the 1 one flying out of a station and back in ect...

"MMO" doesn't have anything to do with raiding.

It only means massively multiplayer online.

An MMORPG would have raids. An MMOFPS could have raids.

EvE is an MMO, and I don't recall any raiding in that game.

I am well aware of that but many do have raids. In any case, question was answered and I caved and it's installing now.

Also ordered a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS for this and KSP.

I decided to get into ED before the raids...

But seriously I figured that getting a grip on solo play would aid in group play as it progressed. As to raids....well that is a part of some mmorpgs but not all.

One of the wonderful things about this game is that you don't have to do anything you don't want to. For example, the community goal at Yembo is great for trading - you get really top prices on metals - but you can still make your money flying in the armpit of the Empire hundreds of light years away from the swarm of pirates such a public cash-cow entails.

Personally, I like the adrenaline rush when you drop into one of the anarchy systems on the way to Yembo with a hold full of silver to find four pirate ships hanging out in SC near the nav beacon. Outsmarting them is great fun (I'm not going to fight with a hold full of precious metal).

Good choice! It is a fun game with tons to do. I also use the T Flight HOTAS and it is a great addition, especially for the price. Welcome commander!
