Question regarding play modes

Ok, i've been looking through some posts and although some people seemed to hint at this i thought i would ask the question.

So just say i'm starting out and decide that i'm not ready for the online mode with everyone and i start out with the solo mode and after a while i start making credits and getting new ships etc.. if i decide that i want to join the online mode later, what happens to the credits and ships etc that i have already gotten... do i start out with a basic setup again or what?

No, your progress would continue into open. It's a little controversial.

there is a dedicated PvE group with over 850 players in it, the group don't engage in PvP so its a good starting point if you fancy multiplayer without being picked off by other players.

Basically think of open/solo as flagged for pvp/pve in mmo's
They share the same galaxy and commoditities etc

I think FD did it this way so those in multiplayer would not have their immersion broken by fleets of unattackable ships roaming around.

The only real advantages to solo is you don't get pirated by players only npcs and you don't have to queue so often for a landing pad.
Everything else such as upgrades, commodity matket, discoveries etc are all shared.
