Question: tipoff and encryption key

So I got the tipoff but I was in my cutter at the time and it would have taken forever to go to the site in that so I went and changed ship. But now I can't seem to be able to scan the wrecked ship's datacore. Does anybody know - must you be in the same ship you got the tipoff in? Probably because the encryption key is added to your ships computer or some such. Am I going to have to go back and bring the cutter? Jeez Wayne I'll be doing that all day - would rather ignore the tip I think.

What do you mean by "You can't scan it"?

Is it physically not there?
Do you scan it, but it reports the "Core already scanned" message?
Did you scan it and not get any shipwreck data package?

To answer your question though, you can take any ship to do it, doesn't have to be the original.

Thanks guys. Located the problem. It seems that the last update dropped my srv fire group assignments. I also couldn't figure out why the srv weapon was firing on button 2 when I had clearly set it to 1 in the options file. Not the sort of thing you look at when it had been working fine before. It seems that after the update the game decided that I needed the weapon on 2 and didn't need the scanner at all. So by fixing the fire groups back to where it was in 04 it all worked again.

Rather annoying but there it is - fixed now.

yes should not have to the same ship but pretty sure you have to be in an srv on the surface and use the srv datalink scanner.

Yep - requires the srv to do. I tried the ship as well of course but no, has to be the srv. And I can confirm that the encryption key you get given transfers ship with you. So all is good - just the annoyance of having the game change your settings.
