Question to any Star Citizen pilots

I was thinking about actually jumping into SC universe at some point - buy a cheap ship and access to arena commander. But after reading forums and looking at the opinions and videos from the actual arena commander module I have second thoughts.
First, I dont get the whole hype around the damn game. Arena commander looks arkadish as hell and apparently plays better with k+m, not HOTAS (yes I do know that its pre pre alpha...). And apart from the great promises we don have anything that represents the actual gameplay so far.
So what is the deal? I would love to hear some opinions from actual star citizen pilots if this project is really worth supporting.
ps - i don't want to ask this on SC forums because from what I saw most of people there are very aggressive fanboys of the projects. ;)

EDIT: just realized that I should post this in
Space/SciFi Games subforum. sorry, please move my topic.

I backed Star Citizen during the first day of its crowd funding campaign. I was immensely excited for the game, as it seemed to be the game I have always wanted to play.

However nearly 2 years later, we have Arena Commander and I have only played it for 2 hours tops. It need a lot of work to bring it up to scratch. The flight model is very much like an FPS game - and whilst a lot of people are happy with it - those people that really like flight sims may not find it very appealing.

The hangar seems to serve no real purpose other than being a central hub for the other two game modules.

I may take a lot of flack for this - but to be perfectly blunt I don't see Star Citizen in its current form as a Space game. It is completely lacking in every area.

All that said, the graphics are quite nice, the ships look okay...and the game has huge ambition.

But if you are not into arcade shooters - there really is no reason to back the game now.

Unless of course you want to help support the game on a financial level, or desire a hangar full of ships.

Only having an Aurora, I feel a bit shut out from the game. I'm an easy kill in Arena Commander, and it's a yawn-fest pootling around the racing track. It seems like you have to spend more money than just the base package to enjoy the game at the moment, so I can't really recommend it yet.

I still hold out high hopes for Squadron 42 though! Would definitely be worth keeping an eye out on that, and seeing whether the price is going to increase at any point.

They are doing ok, but they screw up quite a bit.

Full keybinding has come in, but no joystick axis, meaning can't adjust sensitivity. Before that they introduced some layouts you could choose for your hotas/gamepad/keyboard, but why did they waste time with that when they could of just put in full keybinding?

At present, the game isn't worth it, i came over here from there because of the Gimbal problem, basically there is a ship called the hornet that has gimbal mounts, that can be controlled by the mouse, AND it lets you fly the ship. So basically it's freelancer. Meanwhile joystick has no such ability to do that, and the mouse users want joystick users to buy track IR, something that isn't used for aiming, rather for situational awareness.

The problem could be solved by copying ED, because at present, hornet users and m + kb dominate, and mouse users try to justify it using absolutely terrible arguments. I'm here because of that, as i want to use a joystick, but see no reason if mouse is better. I'm shooting myself in the foot otherwise.

I have a hornet myself, so i could easily do the lame thing with everyone else. But it's such a disappointment, you don't feel like you are flying, just chasing the circle.

I think such little development in SC AC is because they are hard at work on other things, like FPS universe and such and they just give us enough to keep us playing.

So no, i wouldn't recommend it, not at all. Not yet.
