Question to Imperial commanders from an Outsider

Although I'm an Outsider, I must admit that the situation brewing in the Empire fascinates me. It seems to me that the disagreements often revolve around the core values of the Empire itself, so I have a very important question to ask all you Imperial commanders out there:

In your view, what are the core values of the Empire, the principles you are willing to stand up and fight for? What are the key points that make the Empire the Empire? Imperial Slavery? Devotion to the Duval Emperor?

Meritocracy, style, status, and individual freedom. Believe it or not, the Empire doesn't meddle with one's personal affairs much at all, unlike the Federation, and with the Alliance, it's a crapshoot and depends completely on the local governments.
