Question to steam users

So, as someone who backed Elite during the Beta, I was one of the Elite players who didn't have it on steam (although having a steam account, and always logged in.)

I now finally have it on steam, thankfully.
But I see that... launching the game launches the launcher. And it tells me I need to upgrade the beta.

This doesn't feel right - does this means that every time I launch Elite from steam, and there's an update on the main game, I'll have to download the update in the launcher? My reason for wanting Elite on steam was to have updates starting themselves just at the moment they're released, this makes Elite's steam version pretty worthless IMO.

Soooo, feedback from people who bought it on steam before the 28th and got an update to do?

If the updates are done through the launcher on the steam version, I must urge Frontier to fix that, it's a massive setback.

im beta too, mine installed and updated itself all i did was hit play, there was a small patch to the beta you may have unstalled it on steam in the window between powerplay beta and the small update/patch, who knows
all i can tell you is i installed it on steam and it was ready to go

As long as the Steam client is open and you have Internet the latest game updates should be downloaded automatically. If you do not want to update, go into the Steam client, select the Elite: Dangerous game, right click & properties. Find Game Updates and turn that off.

If you don't have the latest updates you may not be able to log into the servers, however. You cannot play while Steam updates the files.

Does that answer your Q? Also, on my direct download Frontier version of E: D I have to update game files via the launcher

Updates are done through the Frontier launcher no matter what; Steam doesn't update the client directly. Having it on steam just means that you'll always be able to install the game through your steam client.

Edit- seems like people above have seen something different, I've only had Steam, and whenever patches come out the Frontier Launcher takes care of it. Steam only updates the launcher.

Make sure Steam is set to allow auto-updating - but I haven't had the pleasure of an ED update over steam just yet. Only the Mac update which was a Steam app update, which updated automagically.

^^ Tree'd by the poster above.... looks like it may not auto-update the ED client itself until launched through steam.....

I knew about steam and its features, I was just fearing it was a planetside 2 like Steam game... Launch the launcher, OOPS there's an update, have fun!

I'm happy to know that Elite on steam doesn't do that. Thanks!

Once 1.3 is released I'll be able to give it a full test, but I can't see Steam downloading 5 GB of game files to install it then forcing a player to download another several GB in updates from Frontier when you launch the game.

I bought mine originally on Steam. As far as I've seen, it does do updates through Steam. The only time it updates on the launcher is when there are those server announcements in-game saying to restart the game for an update. I'm not in the beta so I don't know whether that works separately through the launcher only.
