Questions about 2nd account.

Been thinking about buying a 2nd account, to take advantage of the current offer but I have a couple of questions...

Once I've purchased a 2nd account, how do I choose which acount I log in with?

When I click "My Account" on the launcher, I get taken to the Frontier website, where I have to type in an email addy and password.
Is this what I'd have to do every time I want to swap from one account to the other?

Is there any way to streamline the start-up procedure by, perhaps, having 2 shortcuts to the launcher on my desktop?

Does it get "messy" when it comes to things like updates, getting multiple warnings about updating the launcher/re-validating the game etc?

Does having a 2nd account screw-up things like EDMC, INARA or EDSM or do those sites/app's automatically work with different log-in details?

Also, FWIW, I absolutely do NOT do Steam.
They ripped me off to the tune of a couple of hundred quid's-worth of games a few years ago and they can go and take a flying falalah so don't even suggest anything to do with Steam. ;)

You just copy the EDLaunch.exe, rename that, make a shortcut, click to run that account - validate once on first run.

One upgrade rules - (You only have one copy of the game installed)

no need to re-valdate except once on major updates unless you mistakenly "log out machine".

EDDiscovery and EDMC work fine with different accounts - I don't use anything else so can't comment.

(I assume you know you need a different email address for each account.)

I run multiple accounts using the same game install on the same Windows user - simply make as many copies of the launcher executable as required in the same directory and each copy retains its own "logged in" details. Just fire up the required copy of the launcher for the desired CMDR.

Not sure about 3rd party applications.

Another point to note is that using a gmail e-mail address to register the account on the Frontier store permits multiple CMDRs to hang off a single e-mail account as gmail ignores anything between a "+" and the "@" in an e-mail address so user+CMDR#1@gmail.com and user+CMDR#2@gmail.com are valid discrete e-mail addresses for store / game purposes but all e-mail from the store will arrive at user@gmail.com.

I'll answer from my situation. 5 Accounts

All my accounts run singulary on whjatever machine I'm running on. I have a main rig which my 2 main accounts run on and a Gaming Laptop which is usually my secondary logged in account.

So; If I want to use Account A on my main rig, I login as that account. If I want to use Account B on my main rig, I have to logout whatever was logge din and log account B in.

There is some way to have multiple 'installs' on the same PC but I'm not sure of the exact process, but am sure, it messes with your journals (if they're important to you)

The exact same as above for whichever PC/Rig/Laptop I use. Even tho I have highend rigs, (main rig about 5k and laptop about 4k) using MC is a complete mess with the head. It rarely stays connected, and when it does disconnect, it really messes up, in that it forgets which mode you were in and thinks you're other account is uncontactable.

TL;DR: Possible, dependence on your setup, Journal files get whacked, but YMMV :)

I wuz Ninjad !

Rob does that mean I could login to the store using one global email address buy stuff and it'd appear on all sub accounts?

Yes, I'm using this trick that Robert suggested to me too when I bought my second licence one month ago and it works preatty straight forward.
You only have to take care when you update the launcher because the two shortcuts get a bit messy. But once you settled down each of them it's ok again.

Wait...

We're saying that the Launcher "remembers" your log-in details?

So, all I have to do is make a 2nd copy of the launcher .exe and then make 2 separate shortcuts (one to each version of the launcher) on my desktop and then I'm good to go?

Yeah, that's enough to run several accounts... (but not simultaneously)

Oooh... that's new.

Just fired-up the new account and immediately got offered an "inbox mission" that could earn me Cr10,000..... if I go to Eravate.

Skip!

Stealthie, I just bought a second account from them on Friday because of the sale.

Assuming you don't want to have both accounts logged into the same time (for multi-crew or whatever), click on Options (not My Account) at the top right of the launcher. From there, choose Log out (not Log out machine, unless you enjoy doing that e-mail verification stuff all over). That will reset the launcher to prompt you for a userid and password. Just use the credentials for the new account and you're golden! I've done this on both my work computer and home computer and it works great.

If you plan to switch back and forth a lot, just don't check the boxes to have it remember your account id and/or password and it will prompt you each time it launches. Or allow it to save it, and then do the Options > Log out whenever you want to switch. Your choice.

This I'm not sure about. I don't think so because the EDMC is actually tied to a specific frontier account, Inara account, and EDSM account. Also, the log files generated by the game will also have the commander name in them, so data shouldn't get mixed up. That being said, this only works great if you only plan to use EDMC/Inara/EDSM with your main account. If you want to use it with your second account... yeah, that's going to require a lot of extra work and I could see things going south quickly. I'm not going to do it. I'm only going to use all that with my main account and not even load EDMC when playing with my second account. This is making engineering a pain on the secondary account, but I managed without EDMC for 2 of the 3 years I've been playing ED, so I'll be fine.

Hope this information helps.

EDSM / Inara / EDMC all work fine with multiple accounts - when you start a different one EDMC will ask for credentials for the new ones. If you don't want to set them up then you don't have to (though obviously then the data gets dumps to nowhere).

EDSM lets you add the CMDRs together (so you can log in to the website as one commander and flip to another without logging in again) - look out for the option. Not sure if inara does the same as I haven't bothered setting that up.

Yes. 2 shortcuts, each will load a different remembered login.

Thanks for the info' folks.

Renamed Launch.exe (in my Program Files X86 directory) to Launch1.exe and then made a copy which I named Launch2.exe
I then created a desktop shortcut to Launch1 with my original CMDR's name and a shortcut to Launch2 with the new CMDR.

Only other "step" was that, for some reason, when I ran the new launchers for the first time I had to re-install the .net framework updates but that all took care of itself.

Oh, and I was relieved to find that the 2nd account does use all the keybinds I set for my original account.
The game has reset a bunch of other options to the default settings though - stuff like the pre-flight checks and music volumes etc.

Might, at some point, get around to installing ED on my gaming laptop but for now the 2nd CMDR will just get used to do different stuff to what my main CMDR is doing.

Started a new account the weekend and first thing I did was transfer 50m to it :D. Grandaderite is de biz :D

All I did was go straight to the standard RES site in Asellus Prime (I took the Horizon's start) and follow the police around until I made about 1.2 million in bounties (took about an hour). After that, I was able to upgrade the FSD on the sidewinder to A class AND put DSS in one of the optional slots. After that, I mapped the Earthlikes in 2 or 3 nearby systems and accumulated (but not able to cash in yet) 2.9 million in exploration data. Then I set course straight for Diaguandri to buy a Viper Mk III for discounted prices. I explored every system on the way there and mapped several earth-like, water worlds, and terraform candidates. By the time I reached Diaguandri, I had enough to buy a fully A rated Cobra MK II, a fully A-rated Viper Mk III, and still have 3-6 million left over. I also shot up in exploration ranks to trailblazer.

At this point, I'd already met the requirements for Felicity Farseer and Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn. So I immediately took my A-rated Cobra (purchased at a nearby system for 15% discounted, and then outfitted in Diaguandri) to a location for Barnacles listed in the Codex. The trip there and then the stop of at Maia to sell the excess Meta Alloys I didn't need (had five, only need one) generated even more exploration money (now a Pathfinder). Then the trip back to Felicity generated even more exploration money, which I cashed in with her (after giving her the Meta Alloy) and shot her up to Rank 3 immediately.

Since then, I've taken off for Dav's hope to farm for mats. By the time I get back, I'll have even more cash. I'm not even going to use my Viper - I'll just let it sit there and look pretty - and will equip a DBS for my combat needs and use the Cobra for everything else. I'll just keep wandering around, making money, while gathering engineering mats/data, until I have everything I need to buy a Chieftain and engineer it. Oh... and I need to go out to the Guardian sites in my Cobra, so I can get Guardian FSD boosters and Shield Reinforcements.

Honestly, with all my traveling around for the engineers, I'm raking in so much money I have no need to transfer it from another account! I could. But where is the fun in that?

The game has reset a bunch of other options to the default settings though - stuff like the pre-flight checks and music volumes etc.

I think that is because those options are account specific and not client specific. Every commander has to do the pre-flight checklist once (unless you disable the option). You could also toggle the switch so you always have to do that before every launch. [noob] I'm not sure why you would want to, though.

Glad it's working for you. I'm using my second account to just have fun with small and medium ships. Also, it will allow me to do Wing combat with my friends while my main account is away on the DW2 expedition.

I picked up two extra accounts with the amazing offers on at the moment.

To be able to run them at the same time, just copy your original ED folder and run the launcher exe from that copy and log in to your other account - If your main install/account is on steam, you'll need to download the full game form Frontier store on your new account and install in another folder. Just make sure you close the launcher before starting your other account as it states only one launcher can run at a time.

For some reason I can't get the 3rd account to play at the same time as it keeps reverting back to one of my open ED windows (even though the launcher was closed). That's just a spare account anyway so not really that bothered ;)

It would be nice if Frontier allowed an easy way to use one launcher to launch more than one account running at the same time using the same install and having configurations saved for each account. I feel this should have been done not long after launch, and certainly now with the offers on the full game with DLC.
