Questions about Exploring in a Wing for 3.3

Greetings CMDRs. After taking a year+ long hiatus from the game starting at the end of 2017, I've returned to enjoy the most recent patch and brought a buddy of mine along. So far, both of us are enjoying the overall experience.

I want to bring him out on a short exploration run with me (maybe 2000ly-ish) so that he can sample the exploration side of the game and play with the FSS (and honestly I need the refresher on how exploration has changed too). But I've never been clear on how Exploration in a Wing works, even before all the new changes. Can anyone clear up a few things for us?

  1. Do we share tags for first discovered?
    -
  2. Do we share tags for first mapped?
    -
  3. Do we have to be within a certain distance/time of each other for tags/credit bonuses/etc?
    -
  4. If "wingmate A" scans and maps a system while "wingmate B" is not there, and then "wingmate B" scans and maps the same system while "wingmate A" is not there, what would be the outcome of tags/first discovered bonuses/etc?
    -
  5. If one of us resolves a planet with the FSS, have we both discovered it, or does the other still need to resolve that planet with their own FSS?
    -
  6. If one of us surface maps a planet with the DSS, have we both mapped it or does the other still need to map with their own DSS?
    -
  7. Do we have to stay in wing during data turn-in for credit/tag/shared rewards?
    -
  8. Is there a bonus of any kind for exploring in a wing, something like the trade dividend mechanic or similar?

That's all I can think of for now, thank you for any help!
Fly safe CMDRs! o7

1. Yes. If you are both within 1000ls of each other when one of you scans the body
2. Unknown. I assume so but have not tested.
3. Yes. IIRC you need to be within 1000Ls of each other. Doesn't matter who does the scanning.
4. Whoever sells the data first will get the tag.
5. Unknown. I assume your wingmate will get the data. Probably not in the FSS but it will just show up in the system map.
6. Unknown. I assume your wing mate will see the planet has been mapped in the system map and also be able to see the POIs in the nav panel.
7. No. It's all collected at the time you scan. I sold data while a wingmate was still in deep space and both our names showed up on the system map.
In this case, my wingmate had already scanned a body before I even winged up. I winged up just to get a wing beacon to land near them and inadvertently DSS scanned the planet as I approached.
When I sold my data, both our names appeared on the planet, which I felt bad about because they had scanned it first and I hadn't planned to scan anything in that system.
8. No. Not that I'm aware of.

Pretty sure you just have to be in the same system when the data is gathered, actual distance doesn't matter. I mapped out a bunch of worlds 98kls away from the primary star while my friend practiced on a gas giant next to the primary.

We both got our names on the First Mapped for all of them though. The only difference was that my name was listed first on the ones I mapped, and his name first on the one he mapped.

Ya I could swear I remember the 1000ls rule being debunked even before 3.3 was released, but my memory isn't reliable. :p

The only difference was that my name was listed first on the ones I mapped, and his name first on the one he mapped.

That's actually pretty neat, good to be aware of.

Hmm, but how does this work with the primary star and other objects close enough to be auto-scanned if one enters the system before the other?

Good question, anyone tested this?

Good to know that there is no 1000ls limit. Same system and it is shared, that's the way it should work.

Hi all. I have spent some time now trying to understand the same questions the OP asked. I have a separate thread started about the CODEX and on planet exploration/discovery because I still have not made heads or tails of what is happening there.

Regarding the distance question I have some video that makes it look like there is still a distance limit between wing members. >>>>> https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gBu6YBKn9y4fTeXMhfeEexH_PUxv53Rg <<< I did these when I noticed that sometimes when one ship did an FSS or DSS that the other ship got messages and sometimes it didn't. I presently think the limit is 1500 ls. It is certainly greater than 1000 but less than 2000 ls. To use the videos, pair them up based on the 1st letter in the file names and watch both videos at the same time. You may have to download them or get two windows resized to run side by side to do this.

Regarding what happens when one ship does the auto scan when entering a system before the other one. If both ships are equipped with all the explorations tools, both will do the same auto scan so both end up with all the information.

If the Ship with all the tools enters first, and the second ship doesn't have all the tools, it may not get all the information but it will get any information the ship with all the tools subsequently collects but I think that will be subject to the distance limit I defined in the first paragraph.

So. If the wing has a mix of fully equipped and not fully equipped ships, the least equipped should enter the system first and probably should stay within 1500 ls of the ship doing the FSS and DSS scans.

Enjoy
YMMV
