I'd like to rank up with the federation. Currently I have a status of friendly with the federation and Allied with several minor factions that are federation. I just keep bounty huntING and doing missions in federation systems. I read that eventually promotion missions pop up? Am I doing this correctly?

Yes.Make sure you do missions for federal factions.
Awesome thanks, I'm guessing it takes quite a few missions. Does it make a difference if I'm doing them all from the same federal factions in the same 2 systems or do I need to branch out more ?
Supposedly it doesnt matter, despite early rumours you needed to spread out. The number of missions required before an update DRASTICALLY increased with 1.3. Check this topic: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=165258
