Questions as to the level of technology in Elite

Of course we have fairly complex ship systems, but I wonder how far it goes? There is not a good picture, as the game focuses a lot on the ships, and rightfully so, but I am wondering about other things. Obviously we are not technological gods as of the time of the game, and we still have quite a few limitations, such as energy, complex A.I, experimental medicine, such as gene therapy, cloning, and use of "progenitor cells", limitations bolstered by the silly taboo surrounding some technologies, and woefully death. (unless you live in the Empire, but the whole mess with the Emperor makes me wonder, if they support cloning, why don't they just clone his ass, and get it over with, or perhaps, due to the nature of the technology, and the status as a monarch, that they are bound by law to not be cloned, as a way to keep the monarchy flowing? I don't know how it works honestly)

My main reason for wanting to know this, is because I wonder what kind of things might we encounter when the first person walky runny bit gets added to the game, its an interesting prospect no doubt. Obviously we have made great strides in weapons, and transportation technology, as well as the ability to create large, self sustained, habitats in orbit of celestial objects. What about the things that affect the people who use that tech?

Do we have a form of Cybertech? By that I mean, augmentations, physical, non-biological, augmentations to create stronger, faster, more efficient bodies.

Do we have a form of Genetic manipulation. By the Federation's present taboo placed on cloning, I am sure they are out on this, but the Empire are all to eager to try and use it, so I wonder how far they have taken it?

Where is the level of computing? Have we got far enough to stick complex computers in just about everything? Do we still need giant blocks on a desktop to get any reasonable computing done?

Where has A.I gone, beyond simple work tasks?

Elite is rather detailed, in well, just about everything, so I am sure they have not ignored these details as well. I wonder if my Pilot will be able to be a transhumanist's wet dream (apologies, I am one of those crazies) and what other cool technological treats will await us, when we exit the pilot seat.

I personally expect (and hope) that there is a mix of tech with the most basic being grav/magnetic boots + an assault rifle and the top of the range being miniguns and exosuits. I think restricting ammo is going to be a good way to go (lore reasons - lasers are too hard to cool to miniaturise). This effectively puts a time limit onto any boarding party and means that sometimes a hasty retreat is necessary :)
Possibly combine it with limited oxygen. Im thinking of a cross between FTL/X-Com and the Avatar film here.

Hopefully you can buy modules that help with boarding and planet landing like Exoskeleton or AI defence droids that can patrol your cargo ship etc that'd be great. Possibly door upgrades to keep hostiles from moving through your ship as fast.
Jetpacks are my dream for this game, see this episode of Red Vs Blue for the why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dT4QUBDmtQ

I'm not so much up for gene splicing etc since that opens up a whole load of mess to be balanced (looking your way X-Com games).

Edit: I don't see much in the way of official response to this but I'd expect we'll get more details when they are closer to release...

Yea, its all speculation right now.

Its said that military grade equipment is pretty tightly controlled, and most definitely illegal, and lethal "personal" weaponry is only slightly more accepted, while also being just as illegal in most sectors. I suspect if we have these items, we will have to hide them, say secret compartments for a rainy day. I think most of the shooting will be done with non-lethal weaponry, and only dead serious bounty hunters, or military sanctioned personel will actually have any form of heavy weaponry, such as automatics, and other such tastey morsels.

And as for balance, it would be interesting to see, how the differing stances on those kinds of tech I mention, between the factions, and how that will play out with primarily federation focused individuals, as apposed to the more lax Empire. I side with the Empire in most things, and this is one of my biggest reasons for doing so.

Also, fashion, I see the Empire has it, I want to be able to play dress up :p

A.I and humans had a war, humans won, complex A.I was banned. At least I read that on one of the wikis.
Interesting, I will have to see to researching this a bit.

They might have better video games.
But the forums will still be full of moaning gits!:p:D

I believe the kids are into sims in the future, so I'm guessing video games got a lot more immersive :) But can you imagine moaning gits on full immersion forums? *shudders*

Most forms of communication, especially internetworking, are banned (humans had a war with smartphones, won it, and then banned anyone from being able to talk to anyone without physically connecting to them eg. to remotely look up prices or talk to people inside stations from outside). The exception is spaceships, who can use a futuristic technology called IRC to send brief character-limited messages to each other as long as they're in the same physical frame of reference.

Faster-than-light travel is allowed (except for communications, obviously). If you have no spaceship (eg. someone blows it up) then you're permitted to travel vast distances instantly via some kind of wormhole-enabled invisible escape capsule that is blocked by spaceship-owning. But if you own one or more spaceships, your personal wormhole collapses and you must physically transport yourself to other places.

Colours other than orange are not illegal, and the technological base to colour things not-orange exists in theory, but those colours are generally considered vulgar by all societies and not encouraged. This is after the great War Against Blue in 3012, which humans won. There are rumours that blue is returning to wreak terrible vengeance any day now, heralded by secret messages hidden in the sound effects made by cargo containers for some reason.

Would the forum going be a sim too, so instead of a board, you go to an actual forum.

PMSL at the wonderful tongue in cheek nature pointing out some of the absurdities in the current ED implementation.

From what I've read:
- A.I.s got to good so they got turned off and making A.I.s got banned.
- gene therapy is used and the Empire has some prominent failures at this: the son of the Emperor. I read somewhere that changing the color of the hair is popular in the Empire.
- cloning is used (see synthetic meat); cloning of humans is a silly idea unless you want a lot of slaves that look the same - that's probably the reason why the Empire allows it. On the other hand, banning contraceptives would be cheaper and more effective. I haven't read anything about the possibility to transfer the "soul"/"mind"/"personality" of someone into a clone. So cloning is a wast of time and effort.
- computing is probably very similar to the level we have today. Most of the advances in computer technology probably went into nicer GUIs and better adds
- nano tech is used but in most cases to expensive and cheaper alternatives are available

You wouldn't need to transfer anything, as the clone would be activated upon your death. While not being "you" its a direct continuation of you, and your agenda, so therefore a good idea for you to do if you are a galactic power with a vision, or something. I haven't seen anything to confirm what you say about computing, and nano-tech, while interesting, is not what I brought up, and I also have not seen anything about it either. I tried finding something on A.I, and I am currently trying to find the article about the Emperor's son.

Edit: It seems the article on the Son being mad is no longer a thing. I really want to read it.

Think of a twin. It's not you and it's not just doing what you do. It's not a direct continuation of you. Cloning doesn't work that way.
Its an exact twin, to say that it's a normal twin is a misnomer as well. I believe it would understand its position, and even if the fact that it was a clone was known to it, would understand its the whoever-prime in the wake of the death of the original. It entirely depends on the method. When is it a clone of? The day before you die? Or is it a clone of just your genetic code, and has to grow as you did before it. There is not enough information to point either way. So the point is moot.

Anyways. I found the article and it nowhere states that the Emperor's son is genetically altered, or was made mad because of it. As far as I know, the Empire have no real gene modification going on, because beyond their flavor text, there is no mention of it.

In 3313, the humans waged a war against rear-view mirrors, and won. Ever since that time, all technology related to looking backwards has been illegal.

So deeply ingrained is this suspicion of looking backwards that some factions no longer believe that anything behind them actually exists at all, but is instead suspended as a quantum waveform containing all possible eventualities in a superposition which collapses when you do a U-turn.

In 3317, somebody had the bright idea of mounting a backwards-facing pulse laser. Their entire star system was destroyed as punishment.

In Reorte, it is compulsory by law for the entire population to always face the same direction. Ships have to exit the space station backwards.
