Questions on Elite Dangerous in VR

I have an Oculus Rift, but I've found that, apart from CQC, I haven't really used it much for playing the main game in Open. The reason is that I quite like having Youtube or some other window open at the same time, and if I have the Rift I feel cut off from all that.

I thought Dash 2.0 beta will address these things, but I find that if I try to activate it, I am taken out of the game. From the demo video a few months back it had looked like I'd be able to pin youtube videos or browser pages whilst still playing the game, so either I'm doing something very wrong or it's just not ready yet.

Has anybody come up with a usable workflow for Elite Dangerous and their Oculus Rift/Vive? Or do you just opt for the fully immersive experience the headsets provide?

Lots of info on using the Dash interface with ED over here ..

Bottom line is that you tend to get taken out of ED while "tearing out" and positioning Dash desktop windows, but once you've pinned them where you want them, they should still be visible when you switch back to the game. However ... people have reported that if you launch ED from within Oculus home then this doesn't happen and you can pin windows while still in the ED cockpit view.

Yes, this. Run ED from the Oculus Home software and you will stay within the game when using Dash. You will also be able to interact with the windows that you pin, whereas if you are running from the launcher they are 'inactive'.

The only thing to watch is that after doing anything in Dash you need to reselect the ED window. :)

Vive user here. so no dash
I find once you have put on the headset, I don't want to take it off. I have stopped using 3rd party programs to assist my trading and such.
I don't do as much long distance travel, as before I would have had the second screen. Not saying I don't explore, but you cant do the all day honk, scoop and scoot.

Other parts of the game are better, mining in an Ice field for example.

I'd love to do this, but I've had a problem opening ED from within Oculus for some time now, and this has remained even following a CPU/Motherboard/Windows change. When I open from Oculus Home, I get a connection error. It says I can't reach the Frontier servers, and I should try again in a few minutes. But it never works. When I run things from the Frontier launcher, no problems. It hasn't particularly bothered me, but after reading this thread, I'd love to have access to Dash and to easily pin windows on those long exploration binges.

Has anyone else encountered this error?

Same here, once i had the vive it changed the game dramatically, you should try the alien sites out in Merope way their cool in VR. And their close enough to allow you to break away and do some mining or combat. My play style has got very pew pew with the fighters since they came our and occasionally the imperial eagle with fixed weapons, some good sessions to be had in the CZs.

Same for me. The thing I love about ED and VR is the ability to transport myself into the game as a starship pilot. Everyone is always talking about immersion with this game and watching youtube videos seems like one hell of an immersion breaker to me. If I get to the point where I find ED so boring I can't play it without watching youtube, I'll just stop playing and move on to something else.
