Questions regarding VR / new rig / Rift S

Hello, I'm back

I have some questions regarding my Rift S and my new rig.

I bought a new PC last week (7800 X3D, 7900 XTX, 64 GB) and curiously wanted to try Elite in VR again, because my old potatoe had troubles with it.

1)
The new one obviously doesn't, it rather chews through what Elite offers it, with ease. Ultra VR settings are no problem.
But I don't like to fiddle through settings, so can someone give me some tips if that preset is ok or if I should tweak something?

2)
I noticed some serious flicker in the livery, mostly with the Mamba, but also with the Type 8. Any ideas what that could be and how to fix it?

3)
I also noticed the orbital lines are only shown on the left eye display of the rift, any idea why that is or how I can change that?

4)
how do you all manage to communicate in VR? I had those problems before, typing is difficult, and looking after something in the forums too.

For the forums I use the meta app menu in combination with the controller to view the browser in VR, any ideas if there is a more elegant solution?

2 and 3 are known issues, there's nothing you can do about it, I think. Regarding 4, learning how to type blindly is the way to go in my opinion. For me, marking certain keys helped me a lot. Alllow me to quote myself from a similar thread:

Learning to touch type is the only viable long term solution in my opinion. As a bonus, it even helps when you're not wearing VR goggles! ;)

Well sort of. I can't touch type in the academic sense; I've never learned it properly, but I'm pretty good typing blindly on a keyboard I am trained on and that's sitting in front of me at the right position, and I can adapt to a new keyboard fairly quickly. Here is how I do it, ghetto style:

My main typing fingers are the index and middle finger, but I also use the other ones for keys at the outer rim of the galaxy. Errr, keyboard. I don't really rest my fingers on the middle row as you should, but rather hover slightly over the keys, with my thumbs always touching the space bar, and the right pinky always touches the right shift key.

I also use cheats: For one, every keyboard has two bumps on the middle row (on my layout it's the F and J keys), I think that's where you traditionally park your index fingers. Anyway, those bumps give you an orientation help.

I expanded that concept and marked a few essential keys on my ED keyboard (which is a Logitech MX Mechanical Mini - Awesome little keyboard by the way). I've put little self-adhesive felt tips (actually the fluffy side of rolls of velcro) on the W, A, S, D, 5 and Enter keys. WASD is obvious, 5 is the key for the suit tool, and I marked the Enter key so I know exactly where it is as to not send chat messages prematurely by fumbling around. Those keys, along with the stock bumps on F and J, give me enough orentation so I always can recenter myself without looking, in case I get lost on the keyboard. The rest is just muscle memory and, sadly, a fair bit of practice.

My Logitech MX Mechanical Mini is a dedicated VR keyboard though, I don't have those felt pads on my main keyboard, it would probably drive me mad :). To access anything outside the game, I always have a desktop window pinned in VR.

1. Presets are not that great in my opinion - they’re based on VR as it was years ago. Try putting super sampling at 1.0, other settings high/ultra, then increase HMDQuality until you’re happy with the image (I have mine at 1.25).

…and welcome back as well 👍
Yep. Presets are awful.

Exactly as above and use HMD quality to taste/performance. It should save as your custom graphics profile too so no need to fiddle around.

These days I don’t bother to switch graphics settings regardless of whether I’m in VR or flat screen (other than the size of the window.)

Thanks a lot y'all (y)

Glad to hear 2 & 3 are known issues, I halfways suspected a new build issue with my rig, that makes me relieved.

Is there a way to show FPS in VR, as I have no idea if the tweaks are good or too much?

1) apart from the above HMD, I increase the shadow settings since i personally find it adding a lot to the immersion. Directional Shadow Quality being more important for my personal enjoyment.

2) I have it happening on the Cobra 5, but only in outfitting. More distracting is that unfortunately the lighting is sometimes fighting between both eyes, one showing the bloom from a sun while the other staying dark.

3) No idea, never turn them on

4) touch type, and out of game voice communication. Unfortunately the ingame one is very hit/miss

I use CTRL + F, and then peek on my screen for a quick info on the FPS.

I wondered where you’d gone! The orbit lines is a known issue, really annoying isnt it?
I think theres one of those you can vote on it somewhere about, of s kind person would direct us?

Welcome back!
