Quick build question...

AMD issues apparently fixed for next version, but still present.

I7 worth it if you have the cash, i5 perfectly adequate, i3 underpowered.

I think i5s are currently more bang for your buck, and more than adequate for 99% of gaming.

I generally never overspend on builds, since they're usually outclassed in 6-12 months anyway, no matter how much you spend. You can't future proof a computer!

Up to you though.

i7 is not necessary for gaming, not in the slightest, a decent i5 will last you years, with enough ram 8gb + the only thing that will bottleneck you for at least a couple years will be your graphics card.

if you buy a i5 with a "K" at the end of it means you will be able to overclock it to out perform a standard i7 anyways.

IMO it's worth investing in an aftermarket cooler if you fancy overclocking an I5. I think I paid about £20 for mine and it allows me to rock an extra Ghz at lower temperatures than the stock cooler did. Just make sure you have enough space in your case.

i7 , mine is over 2 years old and will be good for another 3 , just changed my 2 graphics cards recently. If I had an i5 I would hazard a guess I would be changing it next year

i5-4670k or i5-3570k £170
i7-4820k £240

depends if you can afford to extend your budget by £70 or not ?

reasons to get intel:

1. you have stupid amounts of money
2. you require a processor that will last 3+ years

reasons to get amd:

1. you dont have stupid amounts of money
2. you plan to upgrade soon, or upgrade about once a year

I'm using an AMD 8350 overclocked to 4.5 Ghz, with memory overclocked to 2333Mhz and it out performs my brothers i7 rig... of course having a 780ti doesnt hurt

if you want my personal opinion... get a amd 9370..upgrade stock cooler and overclock it to 5 ghz..crosshair foruma z mobo overclock mem to 2505Mhz..GTX TITAN graphics card... 2000watt powersupply... you'll have the fastest thing you can build for under 4 grand

so you have had your i7 for over 2 years and it will last another 3 according to you, and yet if you buy a brand new i5-4670k your saying you will need to change it next year?

I think that is a little incorrect, as no games atm require the power of the i7 it is simply wasted on gaming.

Well I rate Intel over AMD, but that is personal opinion.

My last Intel lasted me 7/8 years. I currently have an i7-4770k (bought specifically for ED but also to last me the next 5-7 years).

Similarly I am an nVidia fan over ATi - but again that is personal preference.

Why not get a GTX780Ti instead? Just as fast for half the price (although it might take some overclocking to make it as fast as a Titan).

I'd rather go for an i7 + GTX780Ti combo than AMD+Titan.

Intel over AMD, nVidia over ATI - I totally agree!

I've had nothing but problems with ATI cards, especially wonky Catalyst drivers. Intel vs. AMD - I just feel better "driving" an Intel processor, dunno why really.

Here's my current build for my gaming rig I'll make when Elite releases:

CPU
: Intel Core i7 4930K, 6 Cores 12 threads
GFX: ASUS GTX780TI-DC2OC-3GD5
MOBO: ASUS Rampage IV Republic of Gamers - Black Edition
RAM: G.Skill TridentX Series - DDR3 - 32 GB : 4 x 8 GB - 2400 MHz
PSU: XFX ProSeries P1-750B-BEFX 750W - Black Edition
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE250 - Solid state drive - 250 GB
Storage HDDs: 2xWD Green WD30EZRX - Harddisk - 3 TB
Tower: Cooler Master HAF X - Bigtower - E-ATX
Optical: ASUS BC 12D2HT - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM / BD-ROM
Display: 2xASUS VS247HR 1080p monitor

Things are subject to change when new stuff hits the market.

amd combo is cheaper of course...with titan z + amd 9370 overclock mem you will out perform i7+780ti no problem for around the same price... but same i7 setup with a titan z will out perform the amd....it will cost you about $2000 more dollars though

Here is a question to people who say that i7 is wasted on gaming... how much of the CPU do most games use? I know that ED can be particularly CPU intensive, using all 8 threads and >50% of power from my i7-4770 (not overclocked). I also know from the "rig to run elite" thread that several people have found their ED experience to be CPU locked with their GPUs not doing much at all.

no ! ,I said if i HAD bought the i5 2 years ago.

Well I beg to differ. I have seen my rig go to over 70% in CPU at times in a game or 2. So I would like to think my 5 year life estimate is on the conservative side.

Also you say "ATM" , so if in 2 years it is required, you'll be throwing away an i5?

Anywhoos, this is all subjective, I always say buy the best you can afford when you build a rig, only my opinion and not a problem if it is a falsehood to you :)

OP, if you can afford it buy the i7, future proof your rig for much longer than if you got yourself the i5.

i7 is definitely worth it in comparison to i5 in ED as ED easily utilizes 8 threads so i7 should provide better performance.

The amd bug.

Is it a processor bug, or a graphics bug?

I have an I7 3770k intel processor and an amd radeon 7870HD graphics card.

So is the bug processor or graphics?

i think the OP is confused
there used to be a amd/ati fix needed but that just turned the planets off
yes that was a graphical bug.
currently ati cards show a few tiny bugs which can be neglected.

but for people building a machine go i5 with Nvidea because AMD isn't supported very well especially with new things hardware or software
