Quick Q: Fastest way to respond to incoming comms?

I was just hailed by another commander (miracles happen!), but on hitting Fast Comms (Enter) to respond, I was informed that my transmission was not sent (apologies, CMDR Flint Read).

Please don't tell me that I have to go into my left Nav Screen, tab over to Contacts, find the correct ship and only then type my reply before I can respond to a hail - I'll be 3 systems away by then!

Related: How do ship-to-ship comms actually work? (I've been playing (in Open) since Beta and have hardly used them at all...)

Once linked, can we continue to communicate over a certain distance? (in SC/not in SC/once docked/in different systems/etc).

Will a CMDR I have talked to remain in some kind of "quick comms list" if I wish to speak to him again? Or will we have to go through the whole process again next time?

Thanks for the help

I just hit 2, highlight thier name and select chat and respond as such. When you're around other players in the same instance "island" you can see them in your "2" Comms menu. From there you can also see your friends whom are online and chat with them, but that's a different matter entirely. A different and frustrating and poorly executed matter.

As far as the Commander staying in your chat menu (as someone you can chat to), it depends if you're still nearby one another in normal space (there seems to be a tether limit if you stray too far apart in normal space to chat), or in the same Super Cruise instance.

If you press "2" you will get a drop down of available people to talk with. Click on the one you want and talk away. It's not very intuitive but it works

I did read that when you recieve a message, if you hit enter and then type /r and your message, it will return to that person, and I'm pretty sure I've used this successfully.
