Quick Q re Allied Security Patrols

Any info would be appreciated guys - oh and gals of course!

For example. I'm allied to a faction and am mining in the system. I have security patrols that I am allied to in the area and they are green to me visually. If they are in a fight against a substantial enemy, am I entitled to join in on their side against that enemy, given that I am eitherv friendly or allied with the security patrols?

I know it sounds a bit strange but the securit patrols are so dumb sometimes, I feel sorry for them and simply have the desire to lend a hand. Most of em couldn't hit the side of a barn with a shotgun!

Don't do that. They are pain in some dark place. They just love to get into your line of fire, you will get wanted and they fine you, then shoot you happily. Just don't.
