Quick Q: Which module upgrade will most help reduce hull heat damage while fuel scooping?

Dunno, I'm using a stock Adder and never had an issue with heat damage, so possibly you're getting too close whilst scooping?

Quick guide to damage-free scooping:
  1. Find the rate at which you can scoop without overheating. This depends on the scoop and possibly the ship, haven't tried. For my combo, it's around 20/s, where I can sit around at under 100% pretty much indefinitely.
  2. Carefully, i.e., slowly, approach the star until you are at that rate.
  3. Throttle all the way back so you slow down to 30 km/s, at that speed you really won't see a change, but you can look along a tangent to the star.
  4. Wait until you're all filled up (or interdicted, in which case: tough cookies).

any module which will help you to get better fuel scoop, so you wont have to go too close to the sun.

And that's good advice too :D

When you buy a new scoop, fly to the next yellow star and slowly get close enough that your scoop rate does not increase anymore.
You now have found the max rate for your particular scoop.
Simply stick to around 70% of that rate in the future and you should be fine (for most stars, some are hotter than others)

A class fuel scoop

regularly scoops at 20 p/s with heat never going over 94%, position yourself at this point then throttle down.

when full, point away from star, throttle up slowly.

job done.

this all you need to know right here

Don't forget this depends on the class, too.
My B5 scoop has a max of 490 l/s I believe :)

I whoukd advice you to try to scoope like described about me, but if you still want to cool your ship: Heat Sink Launcher ;-)

fairly certain scoop class doesn't effect this, that just works for the scoop rate as the heat comes from proximity to the sun, and the required proximity is caused by the class of the star.

Reactor heat efficiency does though, also remember you don't take hull damage until 150% heat so you can just fly until your scoop rate is maxed out then cruise at 30k to fill er up!

Get a good fuel scoop, they suck much faster, have a higher maximum sucking rate and (I think) engage higher up in the atmosphere. Anyway, faster scoop means less time next to the sun = less overheating.

The stock E1 scoop is absolute garbage. Upgrade the class to 2 for a small ship or possibly 3 for something like a cobra or asp, and go for C or B grade.

I don't know if it's just a placebo but I recently upgraded to the reflective armour and either I'm better at scooping or that has made a difference

I seem to take damage above 135, so I wouldn't get quite that close. If I get over 125 I point directly away from the star until stable and try again.

Thanks guys - I do have the technique down ok, but I just seem to be taking heat damage earlier than expected.

The problem is exactly that I am also taking damage *before* reaching 150% - something that never happened with my fully upgraded Asp for example.

I will see what happens when I upgrade Power Plant and Bulkheads (may take a while for those bulkheads though... ;)

Cheers
