Quick question: Frontier Store vs. Steam

So I've had Elite on steam for 2 years or so, but I just bought Horizons through the Frontier Store assuming it would give me a steam key. Instead it prompted me to download the launcher - which I did, and now Horizons is downloading, but it seems to be separate from Steam. Is there any way to "activate" it on steam? Or am I sort of stuck updating this launcher and the Steam one as well? Or should I just abandon the Steam version and stick to this?

I did use the same Frontier account that I use for Elite to buy Horizons, so I suppose I should just use the steam-independent launcher now, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks

You can get a Steam key, but then a cut of all your purchases goes to steam instead of FD

But not once I've already purchased the non-steam version, I assume? Does anyone have any experience with mixing a Steam copy of Elite with a non-Steam copy of Horizons?

See what the download does, I suspect you will end up with horizons linked via your frontier account and everything will carry on as normal with both installed. Once the frontier account is linked to steam then they get a cut I believe no matter where you purchase so that ship has sailed.
Starting the steam version of the game starts the launcher so you should have horizons on that launcher even if not activated via steam.

Its a bit messy but should work. If it does not work then login to the frontier store page, go to my account top right then partner keys. On that page sign in through steam, get the horizons DLC key and activate on steam for everything nearly organised again.

Connect to the store and go there to link to Steam, then here to access your Steam keys.

Don't use the Frontierstore launcher, it's not compatible with the steam version afaik.

Hmm well I have Elite through Steam but not Horizons, and on the Frontier Store it lists Elite as an order costing $0.00, whereas Horizons does have a price. So perhaps if I don't claim my Steam Horizons key they don't get a cut for that. I'll hold off activating it on Steam in case it does work through the independent launcher.

Thank you, this is what I was looking for in case the independent launcher does not work.

A bit conflicting information here haha, but I hope the latter is true so that this download I'm almost done with through the independent launcher doesn't go to waste. I suppose I'll be able to copy the files anyhow if it doesn't. I'll report back with what happens for future reference to anyone who finds this thread and has a similar issue.

And I'd be more than happy to give all the Money to frontier. But I'm not going to throw money away paying more for a product because of exchange rates, and a surcharge on top for exchanging currencies.

So yeah game through Amazon and any in game purchases through the frontier steam storefront with steam wallet funds.

If frontier would like to set up a system that does not require currency conversions thus incurring extra costs for me, then they can have that 1.00 or so they lose on a paint skin.

Update: I chose to install only Horizons (not also core) through the Steam-independent Frontier Launcher, and that launches fine. Also, when I now launch Elite Dangerous through steam, it also lets me play Horizons, despite that Steam store still doesn't show Horizons as activated for me. So, all around, pretty perfect situation and I don't think I'll need to claim my steam key from the Frontier store. One "downside" I suppose is that I have to update the game through Frontier's launcher and not through Steam, but that's not a big deal. Thanks for the help everyone!
