Quick question on Asp vs Type 6 (shielded ) cargo capacity

I am doing some luxury trading in a Type 6, and i am considering whether i should upgrade to the Asp. From reading the forums i get the impression that it has more cargo space than the type 6, but looking at say http://www.edshipyard.com/, it seems to be less?

My shielded Type 6 is currently at 104T capacity, and looking at http://www.edshipyard.com i can only get the Asp to 96T.

Taking the shields of yields 128T on the Asp, and 112T on the Type 6. Did i miss something, or is everybody just flying around without shields?

My asp is 80T, but that's because I choose shields (and cells) over cargo capacity.

I prefer the asp to the T6 though since it's more manouverable and has decent hardpoints.

When you exchange the LvL5 Shields on the Asp for Lvl3 Shields you can have 102+t Cargo. Generally taking out the Shields completely is a bad idea.

Exactly this plus with the Asp you have the ability to change up its use to explorer or heavy fighter later on.. The T6 will always be a big flying box that can only carry stuff.

Unshielded my Type 6 was 112 Tonnes (full cargo spec).

With a T3 shield (smallest) my Asp has 120 Tonnes (no other modules apart from Cargo).

And the Asp growls like a bad boy so do it. More space, with shields and its pretty awesome.

I upgraded from a type 6 to an Asp the other night and had to ask the same question. You can get 120 cargo if you down grade from a class 5 shield to a class 3 and move it to a smaller compartment. This way you can fit a 32 tonne cargo slot to your bigger compartment. Hope this helps.

It didn't seem worth upgrading to the Asp at first but given its weapon capability? Hell yeah! :)

Thanks for the quick responses! Especially thanks (and rep) to Tiberius for pointing out that its possible to run with class 3 shields ( i didnt realize that was possible ).

To the others, the Asp has been my goal for a while as it seemed like a really good allround ship (and i want to focus on combat soon). I have no intention of sticking around in my T6, but
i am currently doing the Tenche luxury trading trip, where the only real danger is crashing your ship in the rush to make money, and i was trying to figure out if i could increase my profit per trip with the Asp.

After that intend to head back to my stored Eagle for a while, and then probably to see how the Asp handles combat.

I went from a Type 6 to Asp. 100 up to 116 tons. (Yes I know I like docking computers) I spotted you could switch shield class.

Yes it is worth it just for the noise and the handling. Plus trading I went up 120,000cr profit per hour. You can fit out for any job. Superb ship. Next stop Type 7.

Really? I was thinking of skipping the type 7. With only four small hard points it seems a bit vulnerable for little gain to me. Thinking I might slog on for a bit longer and skip straight to a drop ship. Got 9 million tied up in this Asp so I'm half way there anyway with the cash on hand.

I've not had my Asp long, since upgrading from a Type-6, but as I understand it, the higher running costs of an Asp are liable to outweigh the benefits of a few extra tonnes of cargo. I love my Asp (am out near the Rosette Nebula at the moment) but I liked my Type-6 too :)

I did this comparison the other nite... sold my T6, bought an Asp and started outfitting.

The fuel cost was certainly higher. I didn't do any hard math, but I'd guess as least 2X more in fuel costs vs a T6 for the same trip. I didn't know about dropping to a lower shield class, so the most cargo I could hold was - something around 86? Less than the 104 in my T6 anyway.

I haven't shot anything in my T6, ever - so the wep advantages of the Asp mean nothing to me. The handling of a T6 is perfectly fine for hauling. Docking is a breeze, you don't have to even line up in the dock slot. After 2 trade runs, I sold the Asp, got my T6 back. For pure trading, I just didn't want the overhead of more fuel cost, and more insurance costs, and more repair costs.

And BTW, I didn't think the sound was that appealing. Was like a P51/WW2 thing going on... I sort of found it more "distracting" and less "oooooooooo". Now the Viper's growl, THAT is a lovely noise. ;)

Yep most people fly without shields. There is simply no point of using shields with the current interdiction mechanics unless you like to fly drunk and hit station walls.

Space trucking: all reward, no risk.

The noise the asp makes is worth the price alone, I call mine the sex panther.

The noise it makes was the main reason I went for an Asp ... otherwise it's just a flying target - way too wide for it's own good!

I like to vape NPC's so with the repair costs of an asp, no shields is a no-go!

Yes it is possible. I have my Asp (partly) fitted for cargo runs, so I fitted T3-A Shields to use the T5 slot for more cargo. You should avoid combat though.

Hint: If the T3 shields in the outfitting aren't redded out (hull too heavy) you can use them.

If you want to combat, then C6 shields are the way forward ;)

I'd be interested in the stats of "Traders that fly without shields" + "Traders that fly without sufficient insurance" + "Traders that died using the dock computer", and finally "Traders that do all of the above, and file bug report tickets when they die."

Sold my shields, sold my weapons, ignored insurance, grinded for 30 hours, made millions, attacked once, by a shieldless sidewinder, which I ran from taking 1% damage. Its was a joke, and very very boring.

Thats not the elite I remember.

Its ridiculous, frontier need to sort it out. They were quick to nerf it for the people who wanted to sell their shields to grind faster, not so keen to unnerf it for the players who dont want to fall into a coma.
