A tribute to the late Sir Terry Pratchett.

In the cool of the late evening, the Bursar strode between the halls of the university, the aroma rising from the great kitchen reminded his large and amply proportioned stomach, the main meal of the day was fast approaching. He looked up and allowed his gaze to take in the wizards tower, in all its faulty and yet resplendent magnificence. Where would the university be without the tower, and the knowledge and ability of the wizards within, well, most of the wizards anyhow. Screams and yelps caught his attention and he smiled for a moment while he recalled times gone by when the fate of all that surrounded the great disc world lay for some reason, in the hands of the most dangerous occupants of the Unseen University.... Magnificent read commander I would give you a thousand rep if I could.

This made me tear up. Well done that man.

I think it's hilarious that folks in the future have to live trapped in domiciles named after 20th century science-fiction personalities - it's a bit like Judge Dredd. It's not like Terry Pratchett saved anyone's life (notably, anyways) or Gene Roddenberry developed a cure for cancer. Yes, these people were clever and talented in their way, but hardly heroic. Pratchett died a pathetic, agonized death. Now I know this will be heresy to many of you, but I feel his books were only a step up from agonized death. Not saying that the world is better without Pratchett, since we need everyone alive as much as possible, just that not everyone was a fan. Even he didn't deserve the death he got, though, and naming or renaming a station after that won't make that any better.

You want to truly honour Terry Pratchett? Donate or volunteer for your local Alzheimer's society. Maybe after folks show collective receipts for a few thousand dollars worth of good deeds like that, then we can be justified in naming a station after the man. Otherwise, all you are doing is just pressing a metaphorical "like" button and feeling self-satisfied for doing nothing at all. Somehow, I think Pratchett would have absolutely hated the idea of creating a memorial but failing utterly to do anything else about making the world better. Even I, the world's staunchest anti-Pratchett-ite can see that.

LIke my old mum used to say, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything". What an awful world view you hold.

I was thinking, the station that have an engine are currently called Occolus stations. How about renaming them A'Tuin stations?
They move by themselves, just like the great sky turtle does (The Turtle Moves!).

On a side note, there is also an old sci-fi novel by Pratchett, called Strata - so he not only wrote fantasy...

He also wrote "Only you can save mankind" which is about a space computer game.

Terry Pratchett

I have just realised that my favourite writer died of Alzheimer disease and I am really terrified about that fact.

I am from Germany but I have read every single book of him and I can totally understand why his books are the most bought ones in England.

I don't know what I am supposed to read now if I want to laugh about our stupidity.

In Elite Dangerous I desperate tried to name my Pilot Commander Samuel Mumm and be a kickass bounty Hunter being able to feel space with the help of my boots. However the name was already taken so I am Mustrum Ridcully now the somewhat puzzling director of the unseen university.

I thereby propose to implement the Discworld in the Form of A'Tuin to honor Terry Pratchett. It would be nice if every pilot hovering a disc world avatar would be there to say farewell.

And seriously: How cool would it be to have the Discworld in Elite Dangerous?

He also wrote "Only you can save mankind" which is about a space computer game.

He also wrote The Long Earth, The Long War and The Long Mars sci-fi books with Stephen Baxter.

Anyway, Pterry will be sorely missed in this household. His books have been a constant companion since I was 12 when The Colour of Magic came out.

Here's a really great talk with Neil Gaiman on the day Terry died, where he devotes a lot of time talking about his friend of some 30 years.

Geraldine, there will be one more Discworld novel published this coming September, it's the final Tiffany Aching novel called The Shepherd's Crown. But after that, no more

Maybe and not quite. I believe that TP has given his daughter his blessing to keep on writing stories set in the Discworld. Fingers crossed that if this is the case, she can keep the magic flowing while impressing her own take on everything

While Terry appointed Rhianna be the 'custodian' of the Discworld before he died. Rhianna has clarified that she will 'hold the reins' of the Discworld, she will be ensuring that any merchandise/spin offs fit with the family's and, more importantly, Terry's vision. She has herself said that she is unlikely to produce any new writing from the universe. As much as I'd love to see more Discworld I don't think it could be anywhere near as good with a different authorial voice, just look what Eion Colfer, a good writer himself, did with Hitchhiker's Guide....it just didn't work.

As much as it hurts, and right now it hurts a lot, I think we have to accept that there will be no more Discworld, at least in book form though I am praying and sacrificing sausages to Offler the Crocodile God that HBO makes a big budget series of the Watch books.

OH well, perhaps more wishful thinking on my part.
But yes, a huge TV series. I know that TP has kept it as an 'open secret' that Sam Vimes is modeled on Clint Eastwood. But he's much too old now, So perhaps Gary Oldman? With Miranda Hart as Syble.
Oh! While I was looking up things on line. I have came across a couple of whispers that Terry Gillian had been in negotiations over producing a film based on the Watch. Again, it might be just wishful thinking, but we can hope.
