Hardware & Technical R290X, what can it do

With the AMD R390 series on its way in the next month or so, prices for the AMD R290s are pretty good and I picked up an Asus R290x last night for under £200 (happy days). I am also looking at moving to a 27" screen and am down to my final two, namely the QHD Asus MG279Q FreeSync or the UHD Asus PB279Q. Anyone running R290s at QHD or UHD? I am thinking that QHD (2560*1440) will be ok but is UHD (3840*2160) a step too far in ED?

S!
Thanks in advance for any replies

Elite will run ok in 4K - you'll need to drop a few settings though - but I'd be tempted to go for the FreeSync monitor anyway.

QHD seems to be the sweet spot right now from price / performance / value for money perspective. I'll get the MQ279Q and luxuriate in the extra desktop space and go UHD in a couple of years. Thanks for your reply. Enjoyed your YouTube channel as well, good job!

4k monitors will need more than one GPU. But the 290x is cheap, so you might as well get another one.

Personally, for new systems I would invest the money. Computers now tend to stick around for years to come.

It's not a new system, more of an incremental upgrade. £700 for a display upgrade is quite a lot :) Dual R290s would also need a new PSU to cope so add in say £160 for a nice PSU and another £200 for R290x and I'm over the grand mark which is a bit too much for me and that is before hassle with Crossfire configuration and driver issues. Lastly I am under water so GPU covers are £90 shipped each? With a dual setup I'd be hitting £1200 ... :p I like ED but not that much!

1 290X runs 3440x1440 fine for me, and looks great. I'm using SMAA and 1X Supersampling, with all else maxxed. With the last patch, I hardly ever dip below 60 fps including in stations and at RES.

Of course, I'm effectively running 1x 290X only because AMD have still not produced an E D crossfire profile. So my 295X2 gets better performance in single GPU mode.

Thanks Joe. Appreciate your feedback. The Asus R9 290X arrived today and I have an EK block arriving for it next week. So looking forward to some plumbing work :)

E:D isn't hard on the GPU, so a single one should be enough for 4k. No worries.
For other games, you still need more than one.

Got some plumbing to do as well, I'm upgrading to a tripple Titan X setup.
