I saw on galnet in game that people are complaining about space racers and that there is a race called "the buckyball" is this a hint that racing will be added to the game soon?

no. there was a player made event. the buckyball race. And this made it into the GalNet news. Pretty cool actually ;-)
So do the racers dump a certain value of cargo in a special pot like a sweepstake? Winner takes all?
It's like the Cannonball Run, you do it because it's cool, and you're cool. You can always run some rares on the side if you feel you need some cash with your racing.
