The scanner design has been around since 1984 and nailed the functionality on the first go in my opinion. Other games like X-Wing and the Wing Commander series used different methods that weren’t as good and took a bit of deciphering to understand - so in this case I think it’s a bit like putting round wheels on a car. Ergonomically terrific!
Ninja'dIf I remember correctly the concept of the scanner and the decision to include it caused a publication delay while they added it to the original release.

Cool, that crappy game finally has something to write home about
I'd call it progress.

Is that a reference to Mega-Lo-Mania on the Amiga?Ergonomically terrific!

"Units received"NMS Next was fun to play in Survival mode for a few hours until the grindwall got too tedious, and then was fun for a few more hours after I got stoned out of my mind and built bases in Creative mode and wandered around. I haven't come back to it.
Crappy game? I understand that its possible that you don't like something.. but calling that game a crappy game? Seriously?Cool, that crappy game finally has something to write home about

Yeah, I know. But its a teen rated forum, and it was about as far as the language filter allowed me to go.Crappy game? I understand that its possible that you don't like something.. but calling that game a crappy game? Seriously?
That was actually in Braben's original design, as were the dotted grid lines showing approximate/relative distance. They did add the FoV (field of view) though. (The two lines creating the "V")

I've no idea why neither of those made it into ED. Personally I still have a problem estimating distance on the concentric-ringed ED scanner regardless of whether it's logarithmic or linear. I found the grid a whole lot easier.
As for NMS, I must admit I'd always believed there'd been some sort of past legal action preventing other space games from copying Elite's scanner design, which explained why few other games implemented it and went instead for combined X-Y 2D plots or similarly inferior layouts. I thought I'd read it somewhere back in the day. Either I was wrong, or Hello Games are pushing their luck doing this. Even the colour scheme is ED's. I guess if you're going to "borrow" a design, it's better to be blatant.
