I do game design myself and I thought this would be interesting.
I know that transmissions in real life take time to travel across space, but for the sake of fun and entertainment, I think it would be good fun to have some sort of galactic radio channels dedicated to bringing news from the various systems, political debate segments, commercial segments and even support of player hosted feeds or other web-based radio feeds.
It may require a lot or maybe not if the community supports it, but the basic idea is to give you in the cockpit a sense of things happening around you.
Very much like how GTA games have radio channels, I think it would serve positively to have such in a space game as well.
We could even anticipate options for having the radio either lower in volume or disable when entering combat, perhaps give it a voice recognition support for flipping through channels, on and off, volume control etc.
The easy reduced cost method would be to merely implement radio channels that actually exist on the web, thereby just re-routing them through the game and adding some nice sci-fi radio distortion at times to give it "the right feel".
The harder method would be to make developer designed channels, perhaps even include developers as the speakers.
While perhaps not the most crucial idea for the game, I think this is the sort of game element that adds a layer of unseen immersion of hidden value.
Some of you may think, why not just use a web-browser for listening to a radio channel, well first of all it is detrimental for the VR experience to tab in and out of a game and secondly, the contents of these web-based channels are not tailored for the game universe, so having them as an option extra, would be better in my opinion.
What do you guys think?
