I got a hauler to 'explore' in, but the rag to riches wants to me to go to a sector 40 ly away, I can only do current 34. wouldn't I get stranded trying that?

Fit a fuel scoop and refuel along the way.
How do you refuel on the way? does it automatically stop at other locations before the final one?

I found out when using https://edtools.cc for rag to riches it plots each system between them (ones you don't bother scanning), so you can refuel on each stop.
That video above looks pretty hopeless regarding explaining how to scoop. There's much more to it than is shown there. Everything is explained in this one from 29:30 to 35:50.

- go to the galaxy map
- set the filter to show only K, G, B, F, O, A, M class stars
- check "apply filter to route"
- select your target
- click on "plot route"

Found out on the map, you can change to direct routes.
The Hauler is fine small ship but, if funds allow, you'd be better off exploring using a Diamondback Explorer or a Dolphin. These are also both small ships, but the DBX has the greater potential for long jumps - once suitably kitted out anyway.
And Felicity Farseer does a grand job of giving your FSD a hefty upgrade(s).

Of course @Frogzilla82 you can always leap-frog (sorry) into a pre-built exploration-build Diamondback Explorer for 25,500 Arxes in the DLC store.

Actually I have changed to a diamondback Explorer for exploration for now. Thinking of using a mandalay for laser mining.
