Newcomer / Intro Rags to Riches ( relatively speaking )

So it's barely been a week since I was here asking for help & advice on how to make cash with my meagre Sidewinder & 1k. Now I'm sitting on a cool 1.2 million, and a decently outfitted Cobra for trading. :D Thanks alot for the advice on how to do that. This game is INSANELY addictive.

Thing is, now I have 2 problems : Trading, which is the best way to make money atm is getting very boring & tiresome now. I wanna have a little fun, try out another method that could make me good cash. I really wanna buy and use a Viper to do bounty hunting etc. but its got horrid jump distance compared to my Cobra. What do you guys recommend ? My target since I started playing was to get myself an ASP ASAP, and outfit it for both trading & Combat. Dont seem anywhere close to the target now, even with 1.2 mil in the bank lol. :(

Also, I need to find the closest way to Imperial space from the starter system. Anyone know which one I can get to ASAP ? I would like to join the Empire lol.

Thanks.

You have all the time in the world to get an Asp. Don't stress it. Seriously, when you get there all you realise is "damn, I need to grind even more to upgrade this Asp to something useful..."

If you want to get to Imperial space go to the galaxy map and zoom out until you see the red systems...head in that direction.

Ahh ok thanks. I'd really switch to being a full-rime bounty Hunter, but that line of work just doesnt pay well compared to trading. Also, the best bounty hunting ship has horrible jump distance. And my Cobra is just mot maneuverable enough to make a good bounty Hunter. So I guess I will wait for the release of the Fer-De-Lance this month, before switching professions.

Sad to say I am very sorry that you are headed down the wrong path in life CMDR, the Empire is not the place to be, because at some time in our future we will meet and it will not be prutty:) SO if you are intent on joining the Empire I will give you some pointers to having a long life. Get your Asp ASAP but you will have to grind:).
I found that I have two ships to trade with at this time a T6 for lucrative short haul trades, to small outposts, and a T7 for Station to Station hauling. When I get bored I change it up to either a combat Asp with cargo space or my kitted out Viper for bounty hunting and no trade. First thing first is to park your butt into a T6 ASAP so you can get the Asp sooner, and keep both. You will need a lot of credits and combat experience when the Alliance comes a calling.:) Elite is a rare and Dangerous treasure:)
If you are short hauling in a secure area do not use the Asp, a T6 is less expensive to run and insurance is cheap:)
When and if we meet i will be the CMDR in the Fer De Lance grinning:)

As for a Viper's jump range... you're a bounty hunter, you really ain't got places to be ;)
It's certainly not a ship for travelling but if you have remotely something you call a "home base",
it's a very good ship to have. (And besides, I'm not in-game right now but I'm sure my Viper's
jump range is just a little below 14)

Empire, empire? Ah, the place where I don't run when Cops (always) shoot me? This way ⬇

Ahh ok thanks man, so I guess I will have to sell off my Cobra and grab a T6 then ?

I guess what I will do first is, buy all the upgrades I can for a long distance slog into Empire territoy, but dumping all my cargo compartments & buying myself a better Frame Shift Drive, Power Plant & Fuel Scoop. Then I'll sell all of it and buy a T6 when I hit Empire Space. I dunno how good that is in escaping Interdictions, or escaping after being caught by an interdiction though.

Have you got any idea how much a Fer-de-lance is going to cost? I think it will be multiples of what an Asp costs... but we don't know yet.

Isn't there a smaller, cheaper combat-orientated ship coming out too? A Condor or something?

Cobra is a veritable fighting machine and is a great utility ship. Can be outfitted for any purpose, and while a jack of all trades is close to a master of all IMO.

I've recently moved from having a 2x Burst laser 1x Multi Cannon gimballed 1x HE dumbfire... this was a bit of an issue because the dumbfires have low ammo and the big fish i go after almost always have point defense, meaning i need to get in close...

I've since got 2x Beam Laser gimballed (not sure if i like them gimballed yet, but you can always deselect target and fire as fixed); 1x MC gimballed ; 1x Fragmentation Cannon fixed.
I was avoiding the frag cannon because i almost never took damage from them, but they are probably in line with the HE-dumbfires only they can't be intercepted and destroyed (though you still gotta get up real close and they have very low ammo stores too).

Try the Viper sure, i've had one sitting in Klemainn since day 7, but the cobra will keep you more than entertained and secure until you choose to make the change. The best part is, you can still be a trader and have these weapons for the most part, as long as you can keep your mass and energy consumption down there's nothing stopping you from BH'ing in your off-time between runs. ;)

OK Ive got my Cobra all set up for the long voyage to Hatmehing. Unfortunately now Im down to a crappy 820k lol. Hopefully I can find some fuel to scoop off one of the Stars on the way, or I am gonna lose a LOT of money lol.

Ahh cool, man. I guess I will stick to Cobra for awhile, and buy the type 6 without selling off the Cobra. Gonna take a LONG time IMHO, but should be worth it in the long-term lol.

I dunno man, I think it should be around as much as an Asp, but definitely cheaper than an Anaconda.

It's taken me until late last week to get enough cash to become owner of an Asp, starting from December, though I haven't been exactly in a rush. It's a great PvE ship and trader though.

Money really sped up when I got a T6 though, had the needed funds in no time at all.

Agree with you on the Cobra. I don't think I'll ever find a ship I love more.

Just a side note to bear in mind, I'm sure you already know though. If you are using gimbled pulse lasers untargeted and so - well, fixed in essence, you would be better off buying fixed lasers as they are larger (no gimble) and therefore a higher class of weapon. I only use gimbled weapons because I can't hit a barn door with fixed weapons...

Do you guys still do rare trading with a cobra with maxxed cargo (lets say with shields)? Or is normal trading with decent routes coming somewhere even close to similar cr/hr..?

Didn't know that, so cheers !
I'm still getting my head around class and such, so does that equate to a higher dmg output and associated power drain?

TBH i just saw beam and bought two, without considering the type... Pulse and Burst i've got no issue hitting things with, but the beams may be an issue if i do miss. That said, they take a while to swivel in, so they're just as dangerous when it comes to scratching friendlies...
But boy do they eat up shields for breakfast.

I haven't got around to rares yet. I dabbled with the cobra while it had quite a bit of cargo trading. I was just doing platinum runs to see what the profits were like within a few jumps and got bored. If you dump out discovery scanners and stuff, keep your shields, and don't have any shield cells, you should still be able to cram in 3-4 x16 slots (I think that's the highest the cobra goes, maybe 32, i honestly can't remember because mine's fitted for exploration/BH and i may have 1x med slot fitted just for any salvage or drugs i find along the way).

I have never done rares, I live in the back country and I have a 145000. run one way and 96000 run back with a T6, 5 runs an hour or a total of 1.2 million. I am trading Gold & Silver for Imperal Slaves, now looking for a good T7 run:) Find yourself and outpost flying 3 D Pirate flags and set up your own black market trade:)

The thing about the Asp, nice ship and all, pretty cheap hahahahahaha You are soon going to want to upgrade it for another 20 to 30 million credits.

If you want an Asp by all means get it. If you want to use the Asp for something other than a trader you really need a T6 to support it. Just as good as an Asp in general use as a cargo vehicle and a lot cheaper to lose. When you start to combine trading with combat with an Asp you will soon find that cargo bays dwindle quickly, 100 ton cargos a thing of the long past.

Only ran rares in a hauler when I happened to come across them, I did not find it more profitable but it was fun. I suppose if you find a rares map and follow it you could make a lot of credits, dunno, not my play style.

Man, now you have me thinking :) I own a Cobra, thought I'll do some trading after all but.. nah. It's in mint condition,
only been taken for a spin around the block. Vanilla configuration and currently 160 LYs away as I've travelled to and
still am in Sol - but I feel like heading back 'home' right now.

For the joining the Empire part, I dunno. To get rich fast with a Cobra fitted for trading there is only RARE RUNS ! Look it up. Its actually fun too and you get cash fast. I started to run rares in my old Cobra and before I knew it I was getting comfy in an Asp (great ship btw)...

Didn't see the bit about joining the Empire earlier.

The easiest way to get started with the Empire is to get yourself over to Liaedin, which is one or two jumps away from LHS 3447 and Eravate. It's an isolated outpost of the Empire.

Oh well, I just got to the Imperial space after a crapton of exploration. Got 1.6 million in addition to a Cobra that should be woth around 500k. I think I will need to grind out another million somehow, before I can afford the T6, it's upgrades AND the money needed to stuff all it's compartments up with trading goods.

OK, just sold my Cobra for a Type 6. Upgraded almost everything, with around 1 mil to spare, but cannot let the storage space go beyond 100 T as I will need a much better FSD for it. My profits have increased like crazy lol.
